I will do some scrounging next to limestone quarry this year for sure 11 full cord you are farther north than i!
OK hoarders this is a Vermont "face cord" it measures full at 7 feet tall 16 feet long and about 18 inches wide, yes there is a piece of plywood to protect window. this is the last one on deck. hoping it makes season but living room is 85 and nc-13 is cranking
my too that little nc-13 gets loaded every 2 hours. I pray new IS gets me to 7 or 8 range that's what deck holds.. upgrade is waiting on wife to make final designs decisions and rework back wall of hearth when nc gets working retirement to a place of honor in garage!
Wow!That's 168 cu feet per "Vermont face cord". And you are burning 11 of those in a small stove? Do you even have time to sleep? 1840 cubic feet a season = 14 full cords. If I had to prepare that much firewood, How big is your home, and how hot do you keep it? Will be interested to follow your experience with the IS.
sherwood, my house is different I got a thread here with pics, living room where stove is stays about 80. oil thermostats set to 50. burned 300 galloon hating oil, 100 of which hot water may thru sept, and I in spurts in winter between loading in winter and a lot after css in spring. having a capt and coke workin on closet inside it's soo cold. but before nc 13 it was 550 galloon heating oil and thermostats still set the same that was be or before wife. house total about 2000 Sq ft half with 16+ vaulted ceiling.
OK hoarders something does not add up here what am I missing. I have burned at least 10 cord of sugar maple same btu as oak or 24 million btu per cord. I don't have MM yet but at least but at least 14 month css. a cord is equivalent over 200 galloon of heating oil there is no way I could have burned 2000 galloon of oil. my house could be improved but is r 19 walls r 40 ceilings. could the nc-13 be that inefficient? thinking about it with how much I used this winter if it ever ends currently cold here...
Yeah that Vermont face cord is basically a full cord over a real face cord. I got 1.31 cords out of the math.
I'm surprised you're able to push that much through that little stove. You sure you wouldn't burn that much oil if you kept the temp the same as you do with the wood?
Looks like I'll have burned 2.5 cords this year. I'm hoping that the efficient insert I decide on will cut that in half or so for 2015/16 I'll get my hoard up to at least 3 cords by summer time, and in fall I will add more to it. I've got plenty in the woods, down and bucked. Getting it out of the woods and into my stacks at the house is the issue, but I've got plans.
Overworking a small stove would likely lead to a less efficient burn by putting more heat up the chimney. If you really want to know how much moisture you have in your stacks, remove a couple of representative pieces, weigh them and then dry them... Compare the dry weight to the "wet" weight and get your moisture content. Then at least you'll capture the data for future reference. Drying can be done next to the stove, in the wife's oven or on some hot pavement in the summer time... Just remember to keep the wood intact as bark or splinters falling off will skew your data... To avoid measurement anomalies, you can get the tare weight of a paper bag and do all of your drying/weighing in there.
Still burning here and will be for quite a while. Probably 4.5 cord so far, perhaps a little more with some early fall pine I burned - another 1/2 cord should about do it (I hope!). Cheers! P.S. this is about normal for me, but probably burned about 75 more gallons of fuel oil this year with the long periods of very cold weather - had to protect the upstairs pipes from freezing. Normally burn one tank of oil per year for hot water and a little bit of heat, probably closer to 400 gallons for this year.
I work from home a lot and wife is a dental hygienists works 27 hours a week. we spend lots of time at home with our little girl. stove does not shut off except when I sleep more than 6 hours not much in winter. buderus oil has furnace burns about galloon an hour if doesn't shut off. 110 days fully cranked would be 2600 galloons if it never shut off with hot water it only reheats water when it get below x degrees. hard to believe I could use that much.. in morning heat comes on at 4 am half hour before wife get up runs for 10 to 12 minutes to get to temperature. and might kick on 1 or 2 times for 3 minutes in next hour before her shower. this is when I get up clean and relight woodstove. just gut here but I think depending on weather Temps and wind etc I think I would top out between 1000 and 1200 galloon
I have a Buderus too - it's a good unit. I have a 330 gallon oil tank - for heating domestic hot water and whatever heat we think we have to use, we basically fill up once/year - around August. I was down to 3/8 of a tank two weeks ago, so decided to fill up while prices are still fairly low. I normally would be at about 1/2 tank right now. Cheers!
NH, yeah I got 2 - 275s because oil guy give me around 40 cent galloon discount for over 400 galloon drop I love saving money!
Old farm house. No wind breaks all open field on wind side. Early 1900's building standards aren't quite up to what we have today. It's a big house too and we like it warm I have a plan for next season though so it should go down on wood usage some
After checking out alot of pictures up on the board with people who do know what a cord of wood really looks like and with me and my little brain doing some figuring out in the carport. I'd have to say 5 cord is quite high. Thanks gang!!
