It's 9pm and time to light a fire. Supposed to go down to 25 tonight. I've got some nice dry cherry to keep things nice and warm
37 out now at 8:30. I've got ash and some box elder in the FP. The fire just makes the living room that much nicer.
Just got up to -12c and the house was quite cool? Checked the kitchen window and Mrs loon had it cracked when cooking supper and didn't close it. Elm in the T5.
26 this morning, loaded with two big hunks of mulberry and 2 splits of cherry. It ain't been bad here, I'll take 20's at night and 40's in the daytime compared to what some of you cat's are postin' up on here
1 degree here this a.m.. Stirred up the coals and threw in some maple splits. Sure am glad spring is about to be sprung..............Probably be a heat wave tomorrow......like +3............
"Checked the kitchen window and Mrs loon had it cracked when cooking supper and didn't close it." ... ... Ooooooops!
It has been around 60°F daytime temps and mid 40's night for weeks now. I let the big stove go out, and built a cook stove in the kitchen and it's keeping the house comfy as can be just cooking breakfast and slow cooking pulled pork and brisket and such for dinner. Beef short ribs tonight....oh yeah, Alder is what I'm burning these days, an awesome dual-use heating/cooking fuel!
We had -3 this morning, I only set the pellet stove at 76 so the sleeper was 62 and the living room was 64. I never did an overnight fire in the liberty so our coffee by the fire was even better/warmer this morning.
40 when I woke at 5AM,37 at sunrise,45 & cloudy most of the day.Burning Silver Maple. All the denser woods I had next to the house were swapped out yesterday & put back in the stacks. No fire tomorrow, mid 60's,with mid 50's expected. for the weekend.
It is 14º this morning on the first day of spring! I'm okay. I'll be alright here. Ash burning in the boiler.
21 here this a.m. Going up to the low 40's later. 3-6 inches of snow predicted tonight and tomorrow before it goes down below zero tomorrow night. The burn marches on..................
33 when I got up. Started snowing like a B-atch an hour ago. Got an inch already. An old timer I knew years ago that has since moved on to a better place once told me that the weather on the equinox of each season is the forcast for the following month and the day after the equinox the following month and so on. Looks like April is gonna be one snowy mudder !!!!
We're still doing Red Maple fires overnight, with a lot of leftover coals. Pine during the day, if needed, which hasn't been much. Supposed to hit 50 today, so I may get out and split/stack some Oak.
Out walking the dog and doing chores for an hour and a half this morning. At least the ground was frozen and I didn't add to the already significant footprint depressions all over the place. And I didn't have to wash the dog's legs before bringing him inside. Complete overcast when we went out, brilliant sun shining off the snow in the woods shortly before we came back in. Maple warming us. Some pretty cold lows still predicted, including 2F. But the sun is nice and warm when it shines, and is still low enough to shine into the home below the roof overhang, and does a great job of heating. Really bummed I missed the solar lights the other night.
Used to try doing that, then decided enough was enough and had vinyl put in all but one bedroom and the stove room. When I built the new hearth, I tiled. Now, when either we or the dogs come in, I just let the stuff dry, then sweep it up. My wife just mopped yesterday. The carpets were getting bad. Dang dogs.
When I built I decided no carpets. That, and no gutters, were the best things I ever did. Had long wideboard hardwoods milled for me (teak, white oak, cherry and maple), and put it in all the rooms in the house, with 5 coats of poly. Fast forward almost 40 years, and the floors look like new, except the cherry has aged to a beautiful dark color. Had a steep roof, generous overhangs, and good perforated building drains installed. I've never had a problem. All the dirt and sand I have swept and vacuumed over the years, I cannot imagine how disgusting carpeting would have become. The hardwood floors are easy to keep clean, and, also very helpful, it is immediately apparent when they need cleaning/sweeping. Still, with the amount of stuff Artan has had on his legs (long fur in the winter) I have had no choice but to clean him. Believe me, I wouldn't if I didn't have to.
Yeah, if these goofballs decide it's time to go play in the swamp, I make 'em stay outside until they dry off some. When they come in, they get crated for a while to finish the job. With the sand we have, sweeping is almost a full time job. Those floors sound gorgeous.
