I've committed a crime

You would think that. I've been working pretty hard at piling in the wood. My plan is push hard get as far ahead as I can and not touch it for as long as possible. I have a season worth of wood already but it's green much to the dismay of family and friends who think I'm stupid as hell for saying its green.
Trust me it's green only been down for a couple months and some even less than that. I don't have next years wood yet my plan is to cut some standing dead and some clean up from logging for next years wood And I plan to continue cutting as much as I can stockpiling and seasoning as much as I can stand which in my current mood is quite a bit

I'm going to b slap the next idiot who says it's ready to burn now. Um no it's not and no it won't be for at least a year or more. Outside of here I feel like I'm alone on the good dry wood plan. You can not dispel the cut two months ago and ready to burn myth around here it's like a crime to let wood season. I've aquired a lot of wood and it's obviously noticeable so it's not like I can avoid the subject when others are around. But I'm sick to death of explaining myself. I'm just going to agree and keep with my plan. It's just irritating hearing it's ready to burn now.

It's all good Woodrat. Must vent sometimes. Good work and plan. I wish I was further ahead than I was, but it all works out in the end. I burn wood that seasons rather quickly. Ash and Pine, hopefully will all be split and stacked by the end of April and ready to go beginning of October.

 

I get you have way more wood than you need why not sell me a few cords. I tell them how long it takes to get wood to the best moisture content and that is why I have 3+ years worth.

They answer to that with I will take the green stuff it burns just fine in my stove or fireplace.

 

I've burnt green or less than seasoned before when I first started it happens.

But you can't comvince some that you burn less if it's good and dry below 20% that is very hard for some to understand. My dad is one of them. He will burn wood that was cut last month I even offered him seasoned wood to prove my point which usually leads to a disagreement

 

I think what really pizzes me off is the fact im under $10k from paying off my house I have kids and I want to make sure im burning safe I don't want to risk catching the house on fire because I'm burning green it's not worth it. Nobody seems to get that except here

Plus I like good dry wood it's less work in the long run I don't have to babysit the stove clean the chimney nor be packing more into the wood box

 

I don't discuss wood burning with most people outside of here.

 

Seems to me that most discussions I have start with someone saying "do you think you have enough firewood yet?".
That usually leads to me saying "not really" and then something about drying wood for several years and then it deteriorates quickly from there.

Now I just say "I'm a little nuts" and everyone laughs and agrees. Much simpler and no hard feelings.

 

My friends see how much wood I have stacked up in and outside the barn and think I am crazy. But they ask me wood burning questions and I am heading them in the right direction. Rome wasn't built in a day.

 

Smart man. Just can't explain enough and even when you can they still don't get it. To each their own.

Once I realized the fact that water doesn't burn, I began the long journey to dry wood nirvana.
Many, many, many, many conversations with my brother about it, and of course we had disagreements.
I keep my drying firewood out of sight (I'm fortunate enough to have the room) for a variety of reasons, and explaining things to people who don't agree with me on the whole process is one of them.
My nephew still chides me about having firewood ready all the way out to 2037 or some such nonsense. I just laugh along knowing that I'll be all set, when they're running out of wood (it's happened).
Keep on keepin' on.

 

My brother in law was the same way - he even had a chimney fire a couple years back, but still continued to burn green wood! He was short on supply this year, so I gave him some dry stuff, and he couldn't get over the night and day difference. It's amazing how well it burns with a few less gallons of water in the firebox!

We're on the same page now. Most of my firewood gathering this year will probably be to get his supply built up.

 

The next burning season is going to be the longest our "myself and the Father-in-Laws" wood has been allowed to season up.. We finished up next years firewood last August "2014" and have 10cords stacked right now!

This week I got up to his property and dropped 8 large Oaks "5-Red & 3White", bucked them up and will attempt to get up there this weekend to split them up. I tried firing up the splitter on Wednesday and it did not want to run. It would run on starting fluid, but die as soon as it ran out of it. I finally said, enough of this and pulled the old engine off from it and threw it in the woods. I have a nice OHV 6.5hp engine that was not being used, so I threw that on there. It fired up with only 3 pulls and ran great "heck of a lot quieter as well". Ran out of time so only put one round though the 4way before heading back home.

How long are you guy letting your wood season "Oak"?

 

If I moved my 16k gallon above ground swimming pool to my shop location, we could live there comfortably and stay very warm, more wood is gooder.

 

Just tell them you want to be prepared in case you get injured and can't cut for a season.

 

That's the best and easiest way to stop that argument. Then you could show then your low to nonexistent fuel costs to heat the house.

 

Yep, if they have a $400 bill for heat, and I've got one for $50, ......I win.

 

I you need to next year I'll swap you seasoned for green. I'm several years ahead and you are just up the street so it's no problem.

I've got plenty of dead I can get im just working on a bunch of green ash right now. As soon as I get it caught up im going to get next seasons wood ready then start back stockpiling again thank you though that's very thoughtful of you
