im hoping somebody will be able to steer me in the right direction. I'm looking to determine final RPM of a chainsaw mill I'm building based on the sprocket size. In other words, if im using a 15HP motor at 3200 rpm with a 1" shaft and I use an 11 tooth sprocket, what would be my final chain RPM? Is there a standard formula I can use as I decide to make changes to my mill or need to make sprocket changes? Is there a standard rpm suggested range for chainsaw mills, etc, etc? I'm using a 6' bar at the moment. Any info would be a great help - thanks!!
This is just off the top of my head. RPM of sprocket * circumference of sprocket = chain speed in FPM, which is how it's usually measured I believe. Normal crosscutting chain speed is around 5000FPM I believe. Found this - gives a formula to convert from chain pitch: http://www.sawmillchainsaws.com/sawfacts.htm
Thanks Shawn! Does anyone know if there Is there a suggested milling speed (feet per minute) for rip cuts?
