I scored some nice 4x6x46 and 4x8x46 oak chunks a while back. I cut them up the other day and found the perfect use for them while they season for the next few years. Might be cheating but these are the most perfect ends I've ever made. It was nice not having to search for the "right" pieces.
When I split, I save 2 types of splits separate from the pile; nice square and true splits for crbbing, half rouds of 6 inches or so for tops. Works out well.
I probably have around a 1/3 cord or so of them. I should be able to get more as the place I get them from gets more. I'd like to figure out something to build with them instead of using all of them for firewood.
I got a bunch of those with slab wood I got two years ago, great for cribbed ends. Won't be getting any more slab wood though. I like to separate my firewood as I had some issues with mixed stuff on some being ready and some not, also with slab wood sometimes you get nice pieces and other times you get all kindling. But getting just the blocks like you did would be great, could pack a stove like Briank did in his new stove post.
Perfect is right Glue a few together, add 4 legs, great tables Great work benches Make a few benches for around the camp fire It'd be hard for me to burn those. I'd burn a few maybe
Seeing how they worked in Brian K's hybrid stove, I wouldn't mind finding some of them to burn. They could probably extend anyones burn time being packed so tight together. Nice find
Good hunks for the cribbed ends - they look like a timesaver. I must spend a quarter or third of the time stacking on finding parallel, non wobbling splits to work on the ends. Nice find indeed.
haha, when I read the thread title I said, humph, no way, ain't possible to be 'perfect', I mean, mine are pretty good but perfect? Then ya had to throw 4 by's in there and stack 'em perfect like that
We maybe could call this cheating but I'd cheat too if I had something like that. Glad you can get them. Hunting done now?
I'll take all they'll give me! I'd like to get out a few more times but never count on it this time of year.
