I got this 044 10mm of of Craigslist this weekend. I forgot my torx 27 bit at the house. The last time I do that. But it should all work out in the end. It ended up having a bad piston. I'll have to replace that, and hoping the cylinder is still salvageable. A hard lesson, but you have to learn some where. But on the bright note it's got all good plastic. The only portion I'm missing is the "Stihl" decal on the side cover.

I dunno, parts for them 044's are getting scarce and they're a little weak in the oiler department to run a 36" bar, even with double half-skip square chisel. Better just box it up and send it to me. I could use it for parts, or sumthin'. :p :D

Awesome! Looks like a very nice saw. Good luck with the cylinder. You can obviously get AM pistons for those, but they're also still available OEM, and although I haven't looked into it I've heard Stihl piston prices have dropped significantly this year to the point they're nearly competitive with AM.

Good luck with it Chvymn99. An interesting project for you I am sure. Good you can do that stuff. I don't have the patience for working the mechanics of a chainsaw. I do the basics, but that is it. Hope it goes well for ya!

Nope, that's beyond my abilities too. That's why I'm sending it to mdavlee to be worked on. I think he's developed a game plan to fix the old baby up. I'm excited to get another 70 cc in my arsonal.

Yea, I'm thinking 20" - 25" bar is in its future. I've got other saws that can handle the bigger bars....... I've heard & a lot of great things about this model, I'm excited to how it performs...

That's his game plan is to get a new piston. As long as the cylinder is salvageable. If not will go to game plan B...

If that's the saw I think it is, I'll have to let the original owner know what's happening with it. He'd be stoked to hear it got hopped up.

Having tried a lot of saws over the last couple of years, my 044 is the only one I'm sure I don't want to sell anytime soon. I suspect you'll like it a lot.
