This is my first year in my new house and we wanted to get a real tree (I always grew up with real trees but the boss lady did not) so I know they can be a real mess. Any thing special I should do to keep this thing from losing all its needles before x-mas? I usually have the stove room around 75 so its hot and dry in there but I did set up the humidifier behind it to run overnight. Thanks erryone and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!! Quick pic of the tree from last night still waiting for the limbs to drop LOL wife didnt know reindeer were real!!

Havent tried it but plan to do the same myself this year. Probably need to keep an extra careful eye on keeping the water full. I know our fish tank is in the stove room and we are constantly adding water to the tank.

As you probably already know, make a fresh cut on the bottom of the tree before you put it in the water so it soaks up H2O from the stand faster.

That makes since. How fresh can it be? We normally go out and cut it down then bring it straight home and set it up. I'm assuming you mean more if you get an already cut tree?

I already cut a good 4" off the bottom just to fit it in the room :)

Just brought home a tree I cut down yesterday. It was in the stand within an hour from when I cut it. We do this every year. It does dry out quickly. Tree is in the room right next to the stove room. So if the stove room is 80, then the tree room is 75. Wife has a 2L bottle she uses to fill it each morning. Doesn't always take the whole thing, but some days it does. Daily watering helps keep the needling down.

I guess it depends on how warm it is when you cut it and what the humidity and wind are like. If it is above freezing, I would assume that water is transpiring out of the needles. Here's an excerpt from this website: http://www.realchristmastrees.org/dnn/AllAboutTrees/FAQs.aspx

Is a fresh cut really necessary before putting a tree in a water stand?
Always make a fresh cut if possible. After time, generally 3 to 6 hours, the cut stump gets air in the plant tissue, which lessens a tree's water absorption capacity. A fresh cut will reopen the pores that take up water.

This will be year four with a stove in the same room as our tree. We usually get the tree Thanksgiving weekend, and my wife like to have the tree up through to the second weekend in January since we usually have her father's birthday at our house. The tree stays green and in good shape for all but the last few days. Our tree is only a few feet away from the stove and it does not seem to cause the tree any harm. We will check the water level daily.

I grew up with a real tree and wood heat. We always waited until mid Dec. to put it up. As mentioned, make a fresh cut on the stump. I thought it needed to be fresh enough to keep the sap from trying to seal the wound. 1-2 hours maybe, maybe not. It will need lots of water, sometimes more than once a day. You can also buy additives for the water that help preserve the tree.

Hard to keep it moist for more than 10 to 14 days inside.

Needles start to fall off here after ten days or so, low humidity here.
They do drunk lots of water at first,

Never tried one for 4 weeks
A live one in a big pot might work

Tree type may be a factor too, spruce here.

Sold Christmas trees for many years -you'd be amazed how early a lot of trees on the lots have been cut - like October early.
Just brought mine in, as everyone else has said fresh cut - 1-2in at least and straight in the stand in the house and fill with COLD WATER. All the additive crap is just a ploy to get you to spend a couple more bucks.
I fill the reservoir every morning before work sometimes a full 2liter each day, it starts to peter off the last week or so. We bring ours in Thanksgiving weekend and out after the first-second week of January

Surrounded by Fir trees. But, we put up the fake one. It looks ok, I have some evergreen scented sticks to put in the tree. Two kittens and two dogs, one who likes to chew anything that will fit in her mouth. I would like to put the tree up soon but I usually end up waiting until the last few days. Kids are gone, and the wife doesn't go to the family room.

I recall several years ago when Firefighter Jake was going to do a TV special on the hazards of the Christmas trees drying out. Ha! He couldn't get it to light!

Most of the time there isn't too much to worry about. We've had Nature's trees all years but one. Last year we were given a nice artificial tree. I'm using that now as some camo for tree stands. We're going back to natural. We usually set the tree up about a week into December. Never had a problem with them.

They are awesome on a bonfire in ~May-June though - nothing like a 25ft fireball to tighten your puckering string:MM:

Well Im happy to report that the tree is still up with MINIMAL needle loss. I think Im sticking with the Frasers from here on out!! Had the humidifier behind but stopped using it about 1-2 weeks in.

Same here. It's been up since Thanksgiving weekend and it still isn't dry. It will probably come down soon.
