I heard a good one today

Brother and sister in law pay aporox $4000 a season to heat. They Have access to wood.

He seen my new 441 and of course asked how much. About fell over when I told him

Said that's just to much for a chainsaw. he's a craftsman chainsaw owner. Said they seen you coming didn't they. Yeah they did was my response

That's to much work I can't believe you go through all that for wood.

I can't believe you won't quit playing x box and pay $4000 a season for heat when you have a insert and access to wood

To me it's not work, well sometimes it is but I enjoy it plus im saving money and staying warm

They don't understand. Oh, it is a lot of work to save a few thousand dollars. We can't say it isn't. But, I can use the $3000+ I save every year on other things I want to use it on. Instead of giving it to the oil or gas man. And at the same time I stay in shape and enjoy the outdoors in the woods. Love the woods! Errr. Wait. So if you are doing what you love you will never work a day in your life. So it isn't really work then!:faint::picard:

People say we are crazy, but if you don't enjoy work at the physical level, you will never find it reasonable to cut wood no matter the economics

I had someone teasing me recently about going out in the cold to fill the OWB. I just laugh and move on. Often tempted to tease them about writing checks to oil people. I cut wood but own Exxon stock, that strategy about sums it up

$4K times how many years? That would buy a lot of video games...

WOW! I totally agree with you, WR.
I put it to electric heating folks(central heat or otherwise) & all other non wood heat sources, this way-
You either work to pay for heat(NOT!) or you use your own time and energy to gather the heat yourself! It's an opportunity cost no matter how one looks at it. But, folks like us enjoy being outdoors; no video games, no sedentary, plunked down in front of some device for HOURS kinda life here!
To hoard firewood is to hoard time outside!!!
Anyway, put a challenge to him to see if he'll help stack up some splits- maybe use some video gaming "Jedi mind trick" stuff to draw him in... Or something simple, like "Betcha can't stack this pile before I get my pile stacked...."
You might be responsible for him kicking the x box habit!
Wish my brother was close by....

Exactly. I started doing tree work/burning wood at 17,worked for small local tree service for a couple years after that, commercial construction since my early 20's.

Getting tired more quickly now & have to take more frequent breaks, but (so far) haven't lost any of my strength yet.Dad said that'll happen all of a sudden when the late 50's hit :picard:

And except to rehabilitate a couple work-related injuries about 15-20 years back.I haven't stepped into a gym since I was 16.

I never encourage anyone to start heating with wood. I don't need the competition.

    Not at all!
Besides, with y'all's remodeling going on, inside WORK is just as rewarding as outside work, and money saving- which is the whole point, right?

Personally I never could see wasting all that money, time & energy in a gym for nothing to show for it but a lighter wallet & a bunch of sweat. At least with wood heat you have a visible result, plus you & others feel it in a warm house.

I just can't seem to wrap my brain around someone sitting on a couch playing a video game wearing a hoody while the furnace is running non stop.

When it only takes a little here and there to build up a supply. Do a truck load a week and or even every two weeks and you will have a pretty good stash built up

There is no hope for them. I work 24 hr shifts a lot of times I get no rest only to get off shift and come home and straight to the wood I go be it cutting splitting stacking. I'm dealing with people who don't get out of bed till 2-3 pm on weekends hell by then im already done for the day

I get ridiculed a lot by some family members I hate saying this but I hope next season the bottom falls out cause I'm going to rub it in hard real hard I hate selfies but I will do them in front of a thermostat and in front of the fire while in a t shirt and shorts

Another subject I get a lot of flack about not burning green wood.
seems seasoned wood is just a myth to some I know

Cutting wood is my stress relief, outdoor fitness center and entertainment.
Also, it's good insurance that you won't freeze or starve to death if the power goes out. :D

Some people have more money than brains and others have less money and even less brains trying to figure us out. Go figure. It's like Rap music I can't stand it but I don't knock those that do, to each his own till they step on my toes.

It's not a lot of work if you're used to doing a little bit of work.

Yep - hear this kind of thing all the time. I try to keep in mind that I, as well as those who spend time here, really enjoy doing this stuff. I love chainsaws, I love dropping trees and bucking, love stacking and watching the wood dry, love the heat, and on and on. Some folks will never think this stuff is remotely fun, and are willing to pay more to avoid it. Fine with me. But, I don't like people saying to me the kinds of things you mentioned - I don't go picking on folks around me who heat with oil - I really don't care. If someone doesn't think what I do is worth it, I really don't need to hear it from them. Cheers!

Well said, then you will have some guy out there like I saw a few years back taking down a Christmas tree with a 12 gauge slug. Hmm just need 3 slugs to take down that 6" tree. You wouldn't believe some of the people you run into here in upstate New York. Years ago while hunting Deer in the southern tier about 180 miles north of NYC saw two guys who shot a goat had it strapped to the hood and tagged. Ask any one from this area it happens all the time, think about him cutting a tree down and strapping it to the roof of his car.
