Spent a week at Grand Marais by Lake Superior this summer. Beautiful, headed back again. However if I knew the chunks of ice had scenery like that I would move there!!

On that deeper thread, it looks like two of the finger lakes are still open, is that true?

Right around now is when me make the annual pilgrimage to the lower Niagara River to fish for trout/salmon (grew up on Grand Island). Dodging icebergs around Lewiston and Devil's Hole should be especially fun this year! A must for any fisherman's bucket list! :seasoned: :shiver:

Are the ice caves created by the wind and waves on top of the frozen lake?

Yep, The caves are formed by wind and waves pushing new ice on top of existing ice

We get what is called ice dunes on the lake. Mostly just mounds of ice with an occasional cave.

When we lived near Escanaba, it seems weekly some stupid egghead would go through the ice with a truck or car. There is a large bay there and the ice is constantly moving which creates some scary ice. I recall one day we had to go to Gladstone and the bay was all ice. Two days later only about half the bay was covered. Then it completely covered again, etc, etc.

And another welcome to you Redfin. Good to hear you've been reading for a while and therefore you are no doubt familiar with some of the names.

Ah, Grand Marias. Always one of our favorite spots but we usually go east of there to some state forest campgrounds. Trouble is, we used to go there and never had a problem getting a good camp site. Now it is really popular so a bit more exciting finding a good spot.
