Helped a buddy today take down two Holly trees. They were as tall as any i have ever seen, growing right beside his house. OWB won't care about the Holly. Was great that he lives near the township recycle center where you can just drop off brush.
You taking the trees down or just trimming them? Uh.... so to speak. I split by hand; I'd hate to try splitting those bad boys by hand!
No, that would be a pretty thin trim! Took off lower limbs to just keep off his house, then dropped them right after that picture. Yeah, splitting them by hand would not be fun, but they will go in the OWB whole.
That's kind of sad seeing some nice trees like that comes down. Those are some very slow growing trees from what I've been told. I've also read that's some of the hardest wood you can find anywhere. I have a daughter named Holly so I'm kind of partial to Holly trees. The bushes, you can have them, grow like weeds. I'd like to have some to see how it burns. Nice find.
The whitest wood known,fairly dense,in old days was used as a substitute for elephant ivory in piano keys,other small musical instrument parts.Also as veneer for fancy inlays/banding in high class furniture & marquetry as a contrast to darker woods.Great for carving/turning cause its density,very fine texture. Makes me sad too to see large holly like that come down, and then get burned. Unfortunately, the tree version will not grow north of about zone 7. Wish I could grow some. Too bad, if the trees had to come down, that they weren't taken down in early December. You could have sold that "holly brush" for a fortune, and had lots of folks enjoy it over the holidays.
Previous owners of home i think let them get away from them, they were up against the house and got too big to trim back. Wife replanting i think in same spots.
Don't know but the mrs wanted em down and now they are. Glad we did it yesterday too, snowing like crazy here today and 25 degrees
