Does anyone have there nc30 vented into an 8" chimney? I've been thinking about replacing the old volcano in the basement with a standard cast iron or steel stove. Im tired of relying on electricity to run the dang blower. The nc30 seems to be a good candidate for my needs but I have an 8" ICC chimney. It's roughly 20ft vertical outside and 4ft horizontal inside. I don't have exact draft numbers but she pulls pretty hard, especially when it's this cold.

I think the thing I'd be concerned about would be if the smoke temps cooled too much before they got to the top and created creosote. Might not be an issue, just the first thing that came to mind.

24' of total chimney height? I would expect it to draft fine.

ETA: I misread the OP. So, 20' chimney. I would try it. As Well Seasoned suggested, shorten the horizontal if possible.

Not an NC30 , but my stove w 2.2cf box I have approximately 5' of 6" pipe and then 10' of 8" chimney, with no problems.

Any way to shorten the horizontal? Can you take a pic?

It's actually 22' vertical including the tee at the bottom. I could shorten the horizontal by ordering a 3ft section of double wall icc to replace the 4ft going through the foundation into the tee. I need the length outside to get out past the eave but inside i could spare a ft at least. No clearance issues as it's poured foundation walls on the side and back of the stove. My stove drafts just fine now, i was just worried about venting the 6" nc30 into an 8" chimney and having too much draft.

mike holton @Englander could probably answer this best.

I would think you would be fine with that much vertical outside. The 30 is known to be a hot burner and probably part of the reason it burns so clean.

I have 18 ft of 6" outside and 3 ft of vertical double wall in the basement and 4' of horizontal. And this stove will suck small kindling splits up the flue because of strong draft!!

Hoping Mike has a good answer for you.

8 inch flue is ok with that stove , cross sectional value is 50.24 sq inches( 8XPiRsquared) so not outside of the 2X 6xPi R squared (28.26) so the flue is not too big for the unit.

at 20-24 ft you should not have draft issues that i can see unless as an exposed flue if it cools too much as said above , with the strong draft you are seeing i doubt that would be an issue as well. if worried about too much draft you could install a key damper though they usually are not necessary in order to back it down a little.

Seems to be the consensus on your 30. From what we have read, it might just be the best stove for the money out there.

Yea I was thinking I read something about the chimney should not be more that like 2 one 3x greater than the outlet so basically what Mike said.

4th burn season for mine as well and I love it! Solid heater that really cranks the heat!!

The homemade convection deck really helps to extract a little more out of the stove. Being in the basement, I push the 30 pretty hard and this helps keep the stove top temp so it is livable.
