It also has a keyed bypass and is a safe not a metal cabinet and here in Mass it must be a safe. Had mine two years now and it has been GREAT. To each his own.
What's the budget on this buy? If you don't want to be figuring out what to do with it later when it's full a week after you got it go to something like a fat boy jr. I wish I had went to the fat boy and went up 2 sizes from where I started.
The state tells you that you HAVE to have your guns in a safe? I am thinking of getting the small gun vault from HF to keep my nightstand pistol and my carry gun in so that my toddler can't get to them. Its $90 on sale. And is electronic locks. Some have had them years and open it 2x a day worked fine no matter what. I have like a 19 gun safe,Century I think. That I got from walmart. Was not close to full when I got it 8 yrs ago and now is overflowing with guns stacked upside down as the buts dont fit. Get bigger. You will put paperwork in their, jewelry from the wife cash pistols and all kinds of stuff that fills it up.
It's significantly more money, but I highly recommend either this model or the top load one they offer: http://www.gunsafesamerica.com/fort-knox-personal-pistol-box-free-shipping/ I was searching online for about 4 months for a bedside handgun safe, and was getting frustrated with the e-lock options. It seems some work great for years, but sometimes they just quick working out of nowhere. Some of them are pretty easy to break into also with a paper clip, or by just dropping it the right way. It was hard to spend double the money on the Ft. Knox, but after getting it I know it'll last me the rest of my life and I'll never have to worry about it, since it's entirely mechanical. The keypad is really nice too, it can be accessed as fast as anything else out there.
Says its unavailable?? And what do you bolt it to? If I bolt it to a night stand they can just take that if it sits there they take it? I guess I should just put the second pistol in the safe and leave my carry gun in there? As far as picking with a paper clip I am more worried about my toddler getting the gun then a criminal which makes my first question along the same line as pointless. My some at least in the near future is not picking anything g with a paperclip. Dropping more likely
This is actually the one I ordered, say's it's still in stock. http://www.gunsafesamerica.com/fort-knox-pistol-box-free-shipping/ I just have mine sitting inside the nightstand, and it's not totally obvious that there's a compartment where this is sitting so it's probably safe from theft. If I was more worried I'd probably run a cable through the safe and around something like the bed frame. But I mostly got this also to keep kids away from it. My 6 year old step daughter was looking for pocket change last month, and ran out to tell me she found a gun in the bed! I'm glad she's been taught well to never touch a gun, but it still worried me that she found it.
Moister dehumidifier. Dad in law has guns... some suffered rusting a bit from store in a safe.. make sure it has moisture control.. some kind of docs on it.
In a safe in a climate controlled room...ie air conditioned in summer they dont really rust. Maybe a more air tight safe than I have they would?? I oil my guns each time I use them...and every year or two if I dont touch them.
If it's always temperature controlled it's probably fine. When I lived with my parents we heated with wood, so my guns were fine in the winter. But in the summer it was open windows all the time, so I had to make sure to keep oil on my guns because the humidity and temperature changes were hell on my guns (my Remington 870 Express with the parkerized finish always seemed to get some rust on it). My safe at the time wasn't in the least bit air tight, so I didn't bother with any other type of protection. Now I have a better safe and keep it in the basement, and use one of those heating rods as well as a large reusable desiccant pack that I recharge about every month. It's cheap insurance against rust.
I purchased a door from sturdy gun safes online. Prices are hard to beat and quality is excellent. Very thick skinned safes also.
Yes this^^^^ I put more things in it than I imagined I would. Including all the car, truck, and toy keys while I was away. Cameras, sensitive papers, ammo
I've heard (but I don't know if it's true) that if you store your ammo in the safe, and the fire becomes hot enough to still burn your guns, that some insurance companies won't cover the damage because of the ammo.
