-11c at the house this morning with an easy 8'' of new snow overnight. About a half inch in town here??? Elm is in the box.
Loon, it's amazing the difference in our snowfall. We only got about three inches. Sunny most of the day. The sun feels great this time of year. I felt badly for Artan yesterday. He jumped the snowbank at the edge of the road, to go back and circle around to tramp down the snow before doing his business, and he simply disappeared into the powder. This year's snow has been entirely powder: no crust at all. Unless one walks where a path has been established, one sinks right down to the ground with each step. Since it has been very cold and nothing has melted, we're talking anywhere from 24 to 36 inches. Haven't had a single storm of over about six inches either. A lot of back to back small snowfalls in the past few month, adding up to a respectable amount of snow. It is so dry and fluffy, though, that I doubt it represents much actual liquid. The ice on the lake is very thick. The pressure ridges are shoulder high.
Guy at work from Napanee said they got it big also Sherwood and it must of stayed in a northern pattern? I had to get the tractor out after work as the driveway was over my boots. Same type of snow here also but just so much of it that its extremely hard to get into the woods for some cutting. Oh ya..-24c right now and elm in the box.
We lucked out on the snow yesterday as we only got a PITA inch or so. Nice to see it is down to -22 f here again this morning.........Got way too warn the last 2 days......Uh Huh.........72 here in the cave this morning. Beech and Maple on the menu. Everyone have a warm safe day.
That powder snow pack is really different isn't it? There's no body to it at all. ... 8 years ago, I took a veeeeeery long ride at our farm, on our old Skidoo... went down the 1500' field to the bottom. I knew it would be deep and soft as I could ride on top going down, but didn't expect this... I started to do a return loop at the bottom, to ride back up on. I got half way around and, wow, the sled just stopped moving. It had dropped down in so deep that the snow was at my waist (sitting on the machine) and all you could see was the windshield and 2 ski tips sticking up. Everything else disappeared. I had snow shoes. Got a pretty good workout for almost 2 hours, shoveling around the sled (it's rear was sitting on the grass) with one of the snow shoes... then trying to walk on em in that stuff. Every step would punch down 3'. Nuthin there. It was nuts. I finally got a trail packed back around and to my track coming down. I remember saying to myself... whatever you do, DON'T get off that packed trail...
Looks like some relief is near! The sun is getting stronger, higher and staying out longer, mother nature will start to lose soon!
Burning ash and a couple pieces of oak 10°F ,-12°C now, low tonight -10 °F I like what I see, might hit 40 on Tue
Did it again. You'd think I'd learn. Fell asleep burning down the coal bed. Sure succeeded! Woke up at 4 AM to a chilly house and a barking dog. He's funny that way. He stays as far away from the stove as he can get and still be in the room, but the minute the coal bed is on its last embers, he starts barking. Accuweather has us at minus 12 F at the moment, previous record for this day -6 F, projected low for today -5F??? Isn't this today? Wind chill -20. We have asked a lot of our stoves this winter. Pretty amazing a small firebox with a minimal amount of wood manages to heat a large home. I'm grateful to the people who have worked to develop the technology in the modern stoves.
Something to look forward to: an alert has just been added for 6 to 10 inches of snow and ice Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday evening. Guess I'm running some errands this weekend....we could well lose power. Good morning, Loon. Hope you're enjoying a warm cup of whatever.
Morning neighbor! Did the same thing lastnight Sherwood but up at midnight to fill it up with elm and topped it off a few minutes ago with some more elm. Didn't check the weather yet but Tuesday sounds like it could be fun.
it's another skin blistering -5 this morning, tomorrow morning is to be -14, another snowstorm sunday in to monday, another fun ride to work that morning, i can't wait.........
It's -15 on the back porch this morning. Ash burning in the boiler. Time to bring some wood in today. Three day weekend!
Wow.....a whole degree warmer this a.m.. -26 f and just a chillin'. 72 here in the cave and just cleaned out both stoves and fed them again. Everyone stay safe and warm today.
-19.5 on the Radio Shack Special this morning, same inside temps and the wood we burned last night........Beech in the Liberty with the Pellet Stove.
