My brother gave me a call at work today and told me there was one down across the access lane where we drag logs to buck up down in the bottom. Told him I would get right on it cause I have been itch'in to exercise my throttle finger here lately. Just what the doctor ordered too, a dead dry ready to burn elm. Our bucking/ loading area. Tried to make it up the hill behind the truck last week, solid ice under the snow, need some tire chains. What is left of the three big oaks across the creek, soft ground and wind have downed a lot of them. Headed out to the main road looking back Put down about 1/2 in the basement, covered the rest stacked out side. I knew it had to be 20% or less cause it bursts right into flames in the stove and no end sizzle. Should be enough to keep me out of next years stacks, Amen to that !
Looks good. That long radial crack is usually a pretty good indicator that the tree dried and shrank.
Yep, dead elm is good stuff to burn. Not good to split by hand though. If the tree is still in the ground, the lower few feet can have, and usually does have to much moisture in it to burn right away though. Each tree is different though.
That it does LP, and this should help carry me through the rest of winter, bound determined not to turn that oil stat on lol.
When I first seen this one I thought it might be another one of those slippery elms I finally figured out from your description on another post. But once the lighter colored chips and deeper rings showed I knew is was hydraulic elm. Burning great for 9 to 10 inch rounds.
I have seen that before where the bottom 2-3 ft was a little wet or sponged. I cut the rest of this one down above the old barb wire grown into it. Its a true fence post now. lol
Woods looks great Todd but for sure one would have to keep the eyes on the road else you could slip off one side or the other a bit too easy! lol
Nice work. I've been thinking about doing the same thing for the same reasons. I have a dead hung up 6-8" elm in the side yard. I'm down to 1/3 cord of maple, but I have another 1/2 cord of poplar. At the beginning of this month I thought I had enough, but I'm not sure now. This is officially the coldest month ever on record for my area.
