The last couple of nights we burned some beech & sugar maple for our over night burns, the temps are back up to 22 so the last load today was hemlock & pine. This past week was cold so we burned cherry during the day an at night the sugar maple & beech. This week the temps will be high enough that we can still burn the pine & hemlock. We still have a New York face cord left of shoulder season wood that was scheduled to be burned this heating season. Because the temps have been colder than the norm, I'll be covering another rack of good hardwood just in case we need it. We had 1.8 cord (not face) of shoulder season wood ready for this heating season, we have the same ready for next years shoulder season.
It was the same over here Loon, it was another great day in the woods. I figure that I could've cut another 3 cord with the time I spent on the trails.
I had a good reason to go back in today, left my Log Peavey with a Log Jack just inside the gate. The junk wood pictured came down in the micro burst in June 2008. All the trail work is being done for two reasons, 1. Making them wider for the truck next spring 2. for sledding this winter.
More the limbing up the trails is for the truck so you won't scratch it up. The stuff I did today was more for the sleds so we won't catch a ski. I always wanted a trail big enough so the truck can get behind the stacking areas, it should be done by next fall if not before. Instead of hauling smaller loads in the rhino I can haul some of it out by truck.
Correction. You may think it will be done this fall but that type of work never stops. Keeping trails cleared is a lot of work.
With this warm up, we might lose most of it. Tuesdays high is 36, Wednesday 40 & Thursday 42. Friday the temps start dropping again.
Right on zap. We are supposed to be warmer than that; maybe 50 tomorrow then it starts dropping from there. A bit nippy over the weekend.
Yup. I'm going to have to use the truck to cutting wood tomorrow because of the milder temps. Don't want to bring the machine in with the ground being this soft. That means I will be lifting more to load the truck. I hope it goes back to freezing so the ground freezes up!
After hanging two gates & digging two post holes, I decided to clean this area up. It will give us a turn around for the sleds in this area. All of it was junk wood so I through it in two different piles.
