With the help of a fellow FHC'er, who found this in his local classified, I got a great deal on this 036 Pro. Basically single owner - supposedly the seller got it from a family member but never used it. $250. Looks like they ran used motor oil for bar oil, but it runs great. These Stihls are just too pretty to leave like that. Four different cleaning solutions, and a bucket of elbow grease later:
How did that Labatt's Blue cleaning solution work for ya? Looks like you had to use a lot of it..... Real nice saw though!
I haven't had it in wood yet, but it seems to be running great. Once it had some fuel in the lines, it started up with 1/2 pull, even without tuning it. The carb was still set to the factory settings - once I had it adjusted, it was idling at 2700 and maxing out around 13000 - right where the manual said it should be. Thanks! It was somewhere between a 6 and 12 pack job.
I love the beer on all these work benches! No one down here knows what Labatt is and I don't know of any place that carries it. Darn shame if you ask me..
On the painted metal parts, I started with some car wash and a green scrubbing pad - gentle, but it didn't get very much. Then I tried some gas - did a good job removing the grime but it stripped the black paint lettering too - redid that with a marker. I switched to some Goof Off and that stuff instantly dissolved the grime, but it took the shine out of the paint. Used some car polish to bring that back. For the plastic, I started with a headlight restore kit, but switched to some 400 grit wet/dry after the little 2" square they give you in the kit was toast.
Once again that is one nice looking saw. You have done a great job cleaning it up. Sometimes you have to clean a lot of coal to find that little diamond.
Nice saw. The 036's are good saws and I found with a simple muffler mod they really run strong. I have two one with the MM and the other stock. Like night and day.
I agree.. Very nice saw Shawn! It's gonna grow on you quickly! These are great saws. This saw (036/360) and the 044/440 are Stihls best two power to weight ratio saws! The 036 is the saw that triggered my CAD.. It's been a roller coaster ever since I bought that saw.
That 385XP you sold me is what set mine off! You telling me it's going to get worse?? I already have an 026 arriving tomorrow! Speaking of which... you wouldn't happen to know where I could find a good deal on a nice 046 would ya??
