Welcome to the forum Oldman47. You'll find there are many old men here and also new members. Glad to have you.

40 acre plots are nice to have, especially when they have trees on them. Sounds like you have a good mix of wood and that will help you, especially that hickory, oak and ash. Not sure if the EAB has reached your neck of the woods but if so, I'd be cutting all the ash. It is great firewood and does not take long to be dry enough to burn excellently. It is a shame to lose all that ash but we've been fighting this now for 13 years. Also be aware that oak, while it is indeed one of the best, usually needs 3 years to dry right.

For more information on firewood, have a look at this: http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/resources/primer-on-woodburning-by-backwoods-savage.6/

You can even download a pdf file from there so you will have that for reference any time you need it. Good luck.

And some of us are actually 39.

Well at least for a couple of days still.

    Welcome to FHC olman47!

Ash certainly dries in a year or less, but unless you have EAB in your woods now, I'd not cut all ash down assuming it will due from EAB. There are studies, and the ash around my city/town are examples ( so far) that eab isn't all encompassing as a death warrant for all ash trees. If you cut them all down, you'll never know if they would've survived. If EAB hits, you can cut them down and burn them. I'm usually a prudent person, utilizing science, and reality to guide my decisions. No offense meant backwoods, or any one else that thinks otherwise about EAB.

With 40 acres, and all of those species, you'll undoubtedly have enough dead standing trees of all sorts to get you ahead of the game.
