I just read a report based on temperatures needed to kill the EAB. Looks like these very cold temps may be helpful to get rid of these vermin. The results were that a temperature of -10 f, like 35% of larvae were dead, and that figure went to 79% dead at a temp of -20. At -30, all were dead. These were findings after the affected logs were slowly acclimated to indoor temps. Retesting later showed less larvae survived after that as a result of prolonged exposure to cold. In China, where these bugs are indigenous, the tells know to kill these bugs is between -9.4° and -15 f.

So the theory is that colder winters will slow the spread of these bastages, and hopefully kill them all. EAB were first found in the Michigan in 2002, or 03. We've had 2 very cold winters in a row. Prior to this and last winter, I don't think any winter since 02-03 has been anywhere near this cold.

That's my scholarly reading for tonight.

    Here's the link.

Not @ all in a good humor this a.m.. Went to bed last night @ 9:30 as I needed to get up @ 4:45 this morning to do a charter run. Nicely asleep @ 1:48 this morning when the phone ringing, launched me instantly awake only to be greeted by a "Gloria" who proceeded to tell me she was from computer repair and that I had a problem with my computer. Well, @ that time of the day, considering the circumstances, I admit to not being social or politically correct. She did learn, prior to our conversation abruptly ending, that her arse was going to be extremely sore after the diagnostics on my computer were finished...........................:mad::headbang::headbang::hair::hair:

Probably someone over in India or China who doesn't realize what the hell time it is here. And goes by the name Gloria to sound American!

I read one last year about it. Hopefully they are correct and last year would have killed almost all of them around here. This year would have got some as well. I really, really hope they are right. I also hope there is something else mother nature can provide that will kill them. Something that won't have a different negative effect. The cold sounds like the best way though. Nice and clean. The problem with that is that somewhere it isn't that cold and they will just keep multiplying and spreading again. :picard::(

Sorry Rotti, it looks like Murphy was watching you sleep last night and had his GF call you to chat.

11 below here. Just came up from sitting down in front of the stove with my coffee... :coffee: It's so good to have a woodstove on mornings like this, with plenty of splits on deck... :fire:

-12 here this AM. That's about as cold as it ever gets in these parts. Stove made it through the night unassisted.

That's the coldest I have ever seen in the last few years. Double digit negatives happen maybe one or two days a year on a cold winter around here.

Woke up to -20ff yesterday with the wind that just increased during the day and I think it actually picked up during the night! It was blowing so hard that the telephone lines between the poles were so far stretched out that even a normal local call was charged as long distance! Now that's windy!
