First off, I want to say that memory is a funny thing...when it works. As I was laying in bed around 4:45 trying to convince myself to stay there I remembered something unusual I ran across yesterday.
That's where the apology is needed. I don't always take my digital camera with me. I have always said I would bring it along, if for nothing else, than just for the scenery. And that is why I feel the need to apologize.
99 and I took a little road trip yesterday and lo and behold, the something unusual was a dead wolf along the highway. It was a healthy animal with a bit of overconfidence or arrogance or just plain stupid, but whatever the case was, it was in no way going to make it across the highway before being tagged by the tax paying users of the highway.
It was on a very well used deer run as evidenced by the solid packed trail in the snow about a foot wide. An adult human could have walked on the trail in sneakers with no sinking into the snow, it was that well used. No collar was on this wolf, but I'm sure it was "chipped" as they are sometimes implanted while still young and in the den. A nudge with the boot bottom verified that the animal had been hit during the dark hours as it was stiff.
A crowd of onlookers, 4-5 cars had stopped; (they remembered their cameras) around the U.P. thats a crowd.
There were a number of comments about wolves. Funny, the ones from out-of-state seems they had a sense of urgency to share their views. But, I'm starting to digress....
Point is, I could have taken a picture of the wolf and the deer trail leading into the woods. And you just know that somewhere in the depth of those very same woods, there are some eyes looking back at the highway. Some eyes belonging to some whitetails...with very big smiles on their mouths!

I feel your pain this fall I was on a job and had a coyote watching me and the owner as we talked about him sitting there about 75 yards out. Then he started to run straight at us did a 360 spin at 50 yards stopped picked up the woodchuck he had just whacked and walked off. Of all times to not have my camera. :-(

Living in cattle and sheep country I will have to keep my political views to myself. Maybe a few Elk will also sleep better tonight.

I agree. The deer were happy and gone.

Having field dressed several deer to the light of pickup headlights over the years, I've seen plenty of eyes in the woods watching, waiting for us to leave them edible parts from my kill.

Cool stuff.I do not like wolves, yotes or cats.Have all up here(now).Yotes are the least troublesome, very livable.Had a pack of wolves up here(transplanted by fwp)they did not live, starved, but caused problems as they could not hunt wild game. They were hybrids, illegally introduced by fish and game.Cats are just pure mean and kill, but are natural,we deal with them.Snomobilled yellowstone park, and surrounding areas when "there are no wolves here" big lie, plenty there, but the gov bought hybrids from ted turner to "introduce" to the park.Total scam, was all a money game, probably to try to control the missmanagement of bison and elk,and has turned into a total mess.

Why would they mess with hybrid wolves when there are enough wild ones out there still?
A number of years ago at our cabin watching meteor showers, my wife, and I and 3 dogs at the time all got forced into the cabin when I heard a cougar growling at us and advancing. It didn't retreat after the dogs barking and me yelling at it. Didn't mess around. Got the shotgun inside the door, but it was easier just going inside. At the time Wisconsin DNR denied existence of cougars in Wisconsin. Months after my first cat experience, a neighbor killed one. What's funny is that now the DNR recognized they do exist here 8+ years later, and even had trail cam footage from that county.

You have to go back quite some years. No wolves in yellowstone park.(quite a big gov lie).Almost no wild wolves(another gov lie).Family in the ennis area had raised and bred wolves(sheilded, never saw a human, just smell) for over 30 years just for the "reintroduction" to yellowstone park.At the last minute they took wolves from ted turners breeding program(from new mexico,I think) and the rest is history.Sorry i think i posted against the wrong poster, but you are right about the cats, they are the survivors, always there, untill a bounty comes up again.

Yeah, no wolves in Colorado either. Really.
And I just found out about the 86 mated pairs of cats between Golden and Silverplume. Not counting the loners and juveniles. Explains the stories I'm hearing about the increased big kitty activity. uggh, I fart in their general direction.

Yeah, big kitties are kinda scary. They really don't know fear of humans. They make me carry nearly at all times while in the north woods now.

That is fine, only know what I learned after I moved here(88),snowmobiled and saw wolves in the park in 89 90 before the reintroduction. Can take you to the family that raised/bred the canadian wolf breed for many years for the reintroduction. As you do not live here and probably only know the park situation from the daily rags, maybe do a little research.

Badbob, I think here's where internet fails us. Well, as far as conversation.

I simply meant that those that introduced those "wolves" into the great national park didn't do their homework.

It may not be as good as it used to be, but right now is better than it will be.
I see the same thing here. Been here since '91, whole different scenario now vs. then.

Totally agree. Most people do not understand the only reason china will buy up our dept is because it is backed by nat resources(land.minerals, etc) from land that the fed gov has stolen from the states.
