Oh man, that sucks. I took a walk to the stacks earlier, and was very tempted to grab a few splits. I didn't. Still plenty of wood in the shed.....
It's been a cold month with not much end in site.... For what it's worth, that stack is really impressive. Looks to be well seasoned....
Hey coal reaper, I did that very same thing last spring. I'd say that was about what we took from one stack. I don't think we'll have to do that this year.
Wow you have a lot of snow there.. How tall is that stack and what do you have covering it? I have questions..lol..
Looks like you got a few more inches than we did last night. We ended up with 5-6" and it was light fluffy stuff until the freezing rain and down pours weighed it down.. What a slushy mess today. Dad and I have both burned through about 4cord each. Gettin deeper into the shed
Thats all we got last night too. Today was the first in a while that some melted tho. I have about 18" on untouched areas here.
I had to do the same. I still have some with what I had planned for this year but it's kind of inconvienent to get to with the snow. I pulled a little from some oak that I cut last year, that was either dead standing or had fallen. To my surprise it burned really well. I'm not sure how much more I'll have to pull but no matter what I'll replace it before next year.
Look at the bright side, at least you have next years wood that you can tap into. If these temps keep up I may have to do the same! Those splits look small! Does the boiler like smaller splits or are my eyes playing tricks on me?
I've already done the same thing. I don't feel bad about it, this winter has been a lot colder than normal. I'll make up for it in April when I stack for 2015-16.
yes they are small and yes the boiler likes it that way. with downdraft gasification you can get what is called bridging. this is when splits jam against eachother and cant fall down to the nozzle. the fire then goes out. happens easier with with larger spilts and not fully seasoned wood. i can also pack more wood in with the smaller splits. i dont mind occasional larger splits, but if they are busting open easy i just keep swinging the x27, especially on the oak. with my storage system i am not interested in long burn times with larger splits, rather it runs best with the hottest fire i can get and the more wood weight i can pack in the better. gotta be dry tho!
That's about what I figured, hot fires would perform better for heating the storage up. Those smaller splits also season faster so that's a win!
Had to do the same thing last year. Although not until April/May. Didn't expect to be using as much as we have this year, essentially two hard Winters in a row. Fortunately the wood I have for next year and the year after is useable now. Although some of my 2016/2017 isn't cut and split yet.
