I sure hope not. I really don't think I can build enough platforms to store all the CSS trees on this place. I do already have the addiction, but I am tempering it to hold on to the bulk of the trees. I also know that the deer need quite a few for the acorns, and cover.
Looks like you have the dream setup! Lots of woods to manage, the right tools to do it and a beautiful log cabin to keep warm in. How do you like your Mahindra? Looks like four wheel drive.
Welcome to The Club cribbed ends you will definitely fit right in here, nice pics, love the cabin Jealous of the 51 acres Hey! ! if you end up with too much wood let us know somebody will come take it off your hands for you
Looks like you got a real nice place there. You might want to check with your county forester sooner rather than later. Ask if they have any cost sharing funds available in programs like WHIP, FLEP and EQIP. Depending on the practices that they are looking for you might be able to get paid by Uncle Sam to do some thinning on your property. You'd be surprised to see some of what they will pay you to do. We got paid to do the 10 year revision to our management plan that we needed to do anyway for our forest land tax rate. The programs rational was that a landowner with a management plan is more apt to make sound management decisions. I had no problem letting them pay us. We've been paid to thin also. Both selectively and doing multi acre patch cuts. (What the uneducated would call a clear cut).
Love the Mahindra so far. Bought it in mid December and still learning. It is invaluable for pulling the logs, either up or down the ridges. I recently cut a poplar for lumber, for the firewood storage platforms (next door neighbor has a 16' band saw mill). Snaked those 5 logs out great. It is 4 wheel drive.
Thanks PB. That I did not know. The county forester did do a management plan when I accepted the previous owner's property tax reduction (they call it Greenbelt here). I need to make an appointment and see what is available here. He did that management plan without even visiting the property.
A woodlot management plan without visiting the property wouldn't fly here. That's a handsome home you have, great woodlot, but best of all you have your brother to keep you company while you play. Way more fun that way. And, welcome.
Welcome to the forum cribbed ends. Beautiful place you have there and yes, I can believe it gets hot and humid. You mentioned poplar and I'm wondering if this is all yellow poplar (tulip) or some aspen? I'm betting it is tulip. Looks like you stack some like we do and it works well for us. You get a lot more rain down there than we do so you no doubt have to top cover a lot sooner than us.
Thanks BS & MW. Yes all of the poplar here is yellow/tulip. The aspen is not native here, according to my key. On the stacking, I have gravitated to mostly 4'x8' platforms elevated off the ground, although I do plan to build some more single stack platforms. Normally I do top cover at the time of stacking, but I did run out of tarps lately. Have some now but this weather hit. The ones that are uncovered now will be at least a couple of years out (hopefully 3) for burning. In all reality my brother and I started our hoarding in the spring of 2014, so this year we are burning marginal (and probably next year). Gotta burn what you got though. Sweeping the flue often. MW. I have listened to Backwood Savage while lurking on this site for quite some time. He has a wealth of knowledge.
Welcome!Good to have you aboard. Great looking place and firewood set up. Glad see you are a fellow Stihl/Creamsicle user.
Yes, welcome to FHC! Beautiful spot you have there. I swear your cabin was in the Hearthstone? (log cabin) brochure about 15 years ago. Beautiful!
Welcome to the forum cribbed ends! You've got a beautiful property, and nice toys to handle it. This is a great place to hang out, great people, great ideas, and just fun in general. And BEER!
Wow. I would like to see that. Next door neighbor built it in ~1984 (it is Hearthstone from the blueprints). He sold it, with the 51 acres, in 2000 due to a divorce, keeping an additional ~ 50 acres. I bought it from the 2nd owner (2013), including a 3 br basement rancher they built for his mom & dad, in 2003. It is my understanding that the 2nd owner placed all the concrete paving stones. The 3 br (rental) is currently empty, therefore my 2 nd Drolet Myriad is used in the basement of the 3 br rental unit to supplement that heat pump. The blueprints reflect it is an "Elkmont Mod" with my neighbor's name. I will search Google for a Hearthstone Elkmont. I would really like to see the brochure, as that would be very cool. Thanks, gives me something to do while waiting to load the stoves.
I wish I still had it 'crib', I'd send it right out. I liked their "hand hewn" log style, between log "chinking" detail & dovetail corners.
Thanks Horkn. I have also followed may of your threads. These are all great folks on here. Learning, learning, learning. It would be fun if the weather would break, so I could cut some more. Yes, I did BEER my 1st post .
I fell in love with the "hand hewn" logs (really think they are machine hewn) and the dovetail corners when I saw this cabin. The pillows at the bottom of the pic is my attempt to see if I can determine some air infiltration the last couple of nights. Don't think that was it. Think it is the window just left of the pic. Will be caulking when it warms.
