lol, I made that mistake in the past one time. About every other year we swing wide on our way down to or back from the Gulf (pan handle FL.) in late summer and spend a day or two there poking around to make it a 10 day vacation or so, I enjoy the Smokies.
Welcome aboard! You're one of my favorite kinds of newbs......you ain't afraid to jump right into the pond and post!! Beautiful setup, beautiful pics, more than one of us are envious! Welcome to the family!
Welcome Cribbed! I just bought a brand new Myriad myself. How are you liking yours? Any tricks/tips you could share with us Myriad owners would be fantastic! Heck of nice place you have going there as well, very envious. What are the summers like in your neck of the woods? Humid and hot or tolerable?
Nice mix of trees you have there. Are you targeting the dead trees at this time or is anything fair game? How about the pine, are you grabbing that as well? I have almost exclusively hardwoods myself with just a handful of pine. Red and white oaks, hickory, sasafrass, tulip poplar, maples, aspen and a few others. I have been cutting mostly standing dead myself with a few select cuts that favor the trees I would like to see thrive. Nice that you have a good selection makes for a more interesting firewood selection.
Thanks Scotty. Working on my introvert nature problem. Also working on getting to 40+ cords CSS (I'll get there). Thank you so much for a top notch forum. Many, many great folks, and tons of information here. Thank you for what you have done, and the work involved.
Welcome, I've been jealous of Stinny 's cabin for a while.........looks like another there's another cabin I can covet.
Stinny's not there that much, you might just be able to move in and no one would no the difference...?
Love reading your IS thread. So far, other than what is in my signature, I have accumulated these toys. Hydraulics is your friend.
Be very very careful. The addiction will take over and you'll end up with 51 acres of no trees. Nice place, stacks and toys.
Hey Sam. Love the Myriad. I load it, let the splits char with the bypass open, close the bypass, start closing the primary air slowly to engage the secondaries (crack the door, for a few seconds, if I go too fast), get the secondaries firing good at just a very slightly open primary air damper, and leave it alone. Coals will burn themselves down in about 8-10 hours. Stir coals (plenty left), rinse & repeat. I do recommend getting a thermodisc kit for the fan, so the fan will shut down when the stove cools down. Grizzly Adam installed one on his Myriad. My insert (1800i) builds up so many coals that I have to burn them down pretty regularly. Very hot and humid (running and dripping sweat) in the summers here.
Welcome to the club cribbed ends! Looks like you will fit right in here. Gather round the fire and share what you know. Oh Yea...we like pictures!
WoW...What more can this thread have in it? Beautiful Cabin and Property, Quite the collection of tools, Start of a nice stash of Hoarding going on, and you've already Beer'd you're own thread... ... Welcome to FHC cribbed ends
I do have some dead standing oak, which I am targeting when I can get to them (still 20+% on the moisture meter). Most of them are at the far end, up high, where they are more difficult to get out with one Cub Cadet Volunteer load at a time. Started, last spring, with the live trees (too close to the cabin for comfort). Got some of those CSS and began working on other blowdowns (both dead and live). Finishing CSS the close to cabin trees that we felled down the steep hill (had to pull up the hill with the tractor). Getting ready to start select cutting (for thinning), like you, as soon as I get what I have down cut up. I may check with the county forester for help with selecting trees, but some look obvious. Planning to cut a new trail, up another hollow (holler here), to open up additional area for deadwood. Unfortunately, the dead beetle killed pine is mostly rotten, on the ground.
