We need one of these threads here. A lot of people can benefit from ideas from others. Don't be afraid to post up some pics - even if your bench is messy! Not going to lie, I kinda spiffed things up for these pics. My 8' bench with adjustable height, castors, and work light. I added the pegboard after I got it. BTW, I got lucky and found this bench from a scrap guy - this thing is great. I wish everyone could have one! Here's a shot of the crank handle used to adjust the height and the castors. Rolls really nice when its lowered even with a bunch of weight on it. A snapshot of the workspace. My modified craftsman workbench. I added castors and a heavy top from a steel computer desk. The top is everything but bullet proof. A little 1x3 to the back edge keeps things from falling off. I added a power strip to the underside of the Craftsman bench to plug in my grinders, charges and USC. There's a short extension cord that runs from there, under the horse mat to a plug on the wall.
I guess that's about it. Show em up guys, don't be bashful. Let me know if the pics are too big for some. I can resize them and edit the post.
I am going to love this thread, Im in the process of building a shop, I have all kinds of ideas in my head about how to set it up, this is where my wood stove will go. looks great
I likely have 20 work benches. I have a plan, I refuse to clean off a bench I just build or buy more. I'm only going to show a couple of my old ones. Ran out of room so I built a new shop and of course bought some more benches. My son also works on my shops. We have a 24x24 "house" garage, a 50x70 barn, a 30x70 storage building and the newest one a 24x55' heated shop. It didn't take long to fill the new shop, didn't even get the walls painted. And we don't have enough room. Everything has it's place but unfortunately I don't know where that is. This year my wife is planning on me either cleaning up or she is going to have an auction sale. My wife added the furniture but it didn't last long. She says I have an auction addition, I think she's crazy.
The 24x24 garage. Mostly just used for the wife's mini van and my bike now but the bench is still over flowing.
I still can't believe the women thought it would be cool to sit out in the shop on those couches, gab to each other and watch us work. Coupla times with the old ether in the muffler and pull over the engine quickly trick and those biotches were outta there. We still have their TV though. I will admit I did have a nap or two on the couch with the dog so it wasn't a complete loss.
I have a 3 car (wide) garage. That is 2 cars deep... (to cold to get a pic) But I rarely work out there. The basement is normally where I work on stuff... Warm in the winter because if the wood stove and cold in the summer because.. Well, it's a basement. lol Pic of my shop room.. And why it stays so warm. This is just outside of it
Main bench built Jan 1987 from 3 x 12 & 3 x 6 old growth douglas fir. Mostly used for various cabinetmaking other woodworking projects, but when I want/need to work on saws/related stuff inside this semi heated cramped shop I lay down a scrap of 8 mil clear poly, then another piece of old plywood to keep any grease/grime away. When its over 15 degrees outside & not snowing/raining I have a bench right outside the shop door for working.
This is all I have of it, as it's still a work in progress. But I sourced the wood off of CL, 14-ply 1.75 plywood, with finish grade maple veneer on both sides, 1.5" square steel tubing, 11 gauge, leveling feet with plastic inserts from JW Winco. Pictured is the short part of the L, the other two sections connect to this and have shelves the full 8 feet. I finished the wood with BLO, spray bombed the steel. I've only been able to work on it a few hours here and there, so its still coming along.
wow that would be some handy stuff to have right there I used to be able to get solid oak doors from a small hospital we did a lot of work at. they were old toilet room doors from before ADA standards were implemented. 28"x80" makes a good size bench and heavy
Nothing fancy for me. Whatever will do. The 3rd one was built so I didnt have to lean if standing. #3
