    Ins. Co. is just that.
The reason for codes is to hopefully avoid situations exactly like the one in the pics.

There is a big difference between ignorance and stupidity!!!

    Ignorance requires education..................

    Stupidty requires a REVELATION............

At least he used chimney pipe.

If I get a chance, I'll get a pic this weekend of a place by ours in northern MI.

I bought an old logwood stove for my maple syrup production off of CL. He had it hooked up in his garage the exact same way except it didn't even clear the roof peak! It came with all the pipe he had.
He tried to give me the piece of sheet metal he had cut his 6" hole in to insert into the window.
I gladly declined. I gave the pipe a light spinning back kick, ran like mad, and it all came down! Fastest chimney de-installation EVER!

Summary: You cant fix stupid and stupid tends to hurt, or even kill.

To play devil's advocate here he *could* have 2" of clearance to the frieze board but it certainly doesn't look like it. Plus, being outside, if there's at least some clearance I doubt it's going to get that terribly hot, the wood structure I mean. I'm not saying it's right but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Maybe he just doesn't know better?

Then again, he could just be that dumb. Time will tell.

Pretty safe bet that some of your neighbors will have a similar setup.

Not liking the forecast. I'll give the PE a good workout, but I'm afraid skiing won't be an option for me. Looks like cards and booze :drunk:And good eats :stirpot:

Problem is that the pool of contestants keeps filling back up.

It looks like it's all triple (or double) wall insulated pipe. If so, we all know that's not cheap stuff. Why wouldn't he just go straight up through the roof? Its really simple to do, plus you get to keep your window!

I actually have a buddy who is beyond stubborn, and usually drunk, that did an install very similar to this one but he used ALL black stove pipe. He does have it angled properly and has it far away from his siding outside but still... I got sick of trying to tell him how easy it would be to do it properly AND legally. I even offered to do the work!

This buddy of mine also doesn't believe in seasoned wood either.....

    Some people don't learn...

Did you watch him install it?
Did you watch him use it?

Could have been there when they bought it?
Maybe true that cancelation would occour.
The reason for code or law isn't working out so well. Seems to me code is more of a money making control scheme.

I'm actually shocked at the laughter and criticism of "stupidity".

Stroll on over TALK to the neighbors. Non shalantly say something of genuine concern after some BS and introduction. Offer some help of a correct install?
If this is life and death like most seem to think it is or secondly worse a loss of everything you own, I would at least try to lend a hand.
