cut for a couple hours today

Well, I got more done for my hoarding at my wood lot.

That widow maker I left hanging the other week is still hung up. I cut the base some more, and it dropped a little. Hopefully that will be enough to get it to the ground without me around.

I cut part of this beast up. Pretty sure its red oak. The whole top of this beast is on my land. The main trunk is technically on the neighbors land. I'll have more than enough work with the whole top, and there's barbed wire/ wire fence in that main trunk anyway.

I cut up a nice dead hickory that had a good lean to it. It was pretty dry already, but all summer and fall being split and stacked will take care of the rest of the moisture in this one. In the background you can see where the big oak is that I was cutting rounds off of from my first post.

I cut down 4 or 5 decent trees, a couple hickory, a couple maple, and about 12 rounds off that oak. All the snow made it a pain to walk through, and for now it's all walking in and out, unless I bring a snowmobile over and use my buddies wood hauling sled to get a he rounds up to the road. That, or wait until spring when the ground is still frozen, and the snow is gone, then I can drive the garden tractor, or maybe snag the ATV from up north or just drive up the farmers field with the 4runner and the trailer. Conditions will dictate how and when I get it out of the woods. Its possible I may get the rounds split before I even get it out of the woods. Then I'll need to get some pallets for the stacks at home.

The only good news about the snow was that there was more of a buffer so I didn't hit the chain on the ground.

I think the stihl 029 is a pretty light saw for its size. Even that still had me beat at the end of the day walking close to a half a mile uphill through the 8+ inches of snow to get to my car. Granted, I was also carrying a 8 foot top section of that hickory, the easy fuel can of premix, and another chunk of hickory.

Oh, and Lucas oil premixed with premium doesn't smell as nice as amsoil sabre in premium.

I know what you mean. I got a lot done today dropping trees, and cutting and moving logs. When I went to take some pictures my phone had gotten so cold it was blank. I have learned many times I have to keep my phone in my pocket of the inside shirt in order to keep it warm enough so it will still work when it is cold.

 

Got any pics? Maybe someone on here can offer some advice on safely getting it to the ground....

Yep. It's not resting on the stump anymore, I cut if off that, but it just walked away from the stump about 2 feet.

 

Not sure that tree in the first pic is oak. Do you have any pics of the end grain of wood by chance?

 

I dealt with a similar hanger recently. I rigged a cable up as far as I could reach. I notched front and rear about 5 feet up, leave a 10% hinge. I then gave it a small yank with a four wheeler and it came right down. Not sure if this is the proper way to deal with a hanger. I took my time, looked things over constantly, and never got that feeling that something g was hinky.

 

Nothing close up, except this other photo of rounds I cut from it. I know, I'm doubting it's oak but I don't know what else it could be that is that big. There were no leaves on it, very un oaky, but its been dead a while. The thing is huge. Could a sugar maple get that massive? That is my best guess. Next time I'm out there I have to get better pics, or some pieces.

 

Here's a zoomed in pic of the first one. In thinking not oak just by looking at the grain, what you can see, and the bark looks mapley. Whatever it is, there's a ton of btu's in that tree, maybe a little less than oak

 

You got some decent wood there, good cutting conditions and the snow isn't too bad where you are.
I'm not sure when we will see the ground again around our way, we must have 3 ft right now with more coming today and Monday.

 

Look like a maple to me, possibly sugar. They can definitely get that big if left alone. Whatever it is looks like a nice score

 

I hear you, every time I dig out around my splitting area, it gets buried within two days. It's getting old already.

 

Looks like a sugar maple to me as well back at the home farm in western Pa we had sugar maple get that big and bigger.

This is what I like about Va. 62 degrees yesterday and no snow on the ground.
