24 out 71 in Shorts and uglies and about 20lbs of coal. Supposed to hit 36 for a high here today. Coal really draws out a low burn on warmer days. Up half the nite with a sick kid bellerin'. Gonna be a lazy day of nappin'. Hockey game tonite if the kids feeling better.
http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/threads/vedolux-37-install.5067/ Its very super awesome. Make it happen.
23° outside house 67° wife needs it cold. 163° at the house 166°leaving the boiler room 270' away. Burning ash some elm. Upper teens twenties moisture burns great. Boiler hasn't dropped below 145° since November. But gassers are needy. Dry wood carefull loading through and often cleaning = low wood use.
We've had about 4 -5 inches of light fluffy snow. 12 degrees F out - not to bad. Now that we have some decent snow cover, the house is much better protected from the cold and wind. A few feet of snowdrift/snow piles at the top of the cliff diverts the wind pretty much up over the basement and first floor of the house. We are supposed to have another 15 cm or more (7 inches or more, before tomorrow evening, then flurries off and on all week. Which can mean anything. A short time ago, this foot or so of snow was predicted to be mostly flurries. After this snowfall, we'll be 30 inches or more deep in snow in the woods. Not likely we'll have any early Spring flowers this year.
You've got a lot more than we do Sherwood. We got about a inch last night, and they are saying another 1-3 inches by tomorrow night. About a foot in the bush. A lot of the fronts seem to be pushing south of us which explains why you have so much more.
Yes, Rotti, we are close enough to the Great Lakes to pick up a bit more of the lake effect snow than you do. Most years, it seem to me, though, that you get many storms that we miss, as well as some snow from the storms off the Great Lakes, and that you generally (most winters) get more snow than us. My property is on the south side of a large lake, and we get a weather anomaly where often storms (especially summer storms) pass along the North Shore, and we get nothing. This winter has been unusual. We seem to be getting every cold front, no matter where it is coming from. We have not, however (until this past week) gotten the snow that comes east off the Great Lakes. Just now looking (and feeling) like a normal winter here.
I hear ya on the summer storms. Often times the summer slammers go down the Quebec side of the Ottawa River here in town, and often miss us completely. Good thing about it is we are already thru the first week of Feb. so now the days are getting longer and the sun stronger.
Those thunderstorms are nice to watch, aren't they? And nice to have on the other side of the water.....
Yes, often times we go sit @ the marina in town and watch the light show to the east. They get some wicked storms rolling down the valley on that side.
About 5º and snowing here and the wind is blowing. I'm hoping the wind settles down some so I can go out and work in the woods for a while today. But it may be one of those days where it is best to stay in. Although the area I am working lets me keep the truck pretty close by. So I work for a while, then take a break in the truck for a few minutes. Works gooder.
34 when I went to bed last nite 36 when I got up at 8 68 inside Threw in a few small pieces to get house up a few degrees then at 10am a few more small pieces and 20lbs of coal . That will hold till 8-9 tonite. Saving a lot of wood at these temps.
3 degrees F, Wind steady for the NE 17MPH, feels like -18. Even the dog doesn't want to go out. Well, that's not true. He wants to go out. Is sitting at the sliding glass door, observing, protecting his territory.. Sees an animal, asks to go out. Outside, barks aggressively for a moment, doesn't give chase, doesn't get beyond the deck. Is asking back in in a moment or two. It's cold. With the snowpack, the wind has much less effect on the house than it would have a month ago. Put three small maple splits in the stove at 8 AM, large coals are burning down now. Very strong draft today. Will put three more splits in within the half hour, then load up this evening for the overnight. I keep saying it, but my stove is doing a lot better with the in flue damper. Strongly advise anyone with an excessive draft to get one. It would be burning a lot more wood today with out the damper, and a lot of heat would be going up the chimney. .
No, thankfully. That must be awful with the temps and wind. Is there enough to be a problem with the trees?
The north east sides of them are froze white and I do hear some cracking but nothing major. Weird its minus 17c here and everything has a coat of freezy rain on it?
Made it to about +5 f here today. Snow ended this a.m.. Went out and cleaned up with the loader and then brought up a load from the shed. 76 here in the cave. Running a mixed menu in both stoves.
