Are these any good? I have seen a few on log splitters recently and it's made me wonder how good they are? I remember having one years ago on a ride mower and dad hated it but that was over 20 years ago.....

I've got a Kohler on my riding mower (1999 Scotts 2554/AKA John Deere 275). No problems with it at all, but its only got around 280 hours on it.

My 28-ton DHT splitter has a 9.5 hp Kohler.

I've only had it since the end of last summer. But it has been good so far, starts easy in the cold weather, half choke, one or two pulls it is running. A lot easier to start then some of the briggs I've had!!

I've put just over 13 cords threw the splitter since having it, and so far so good!! One of the reasons I bought this splitter was for the Kohler, as some of the others I was looking at had briggs on them. I've not had good times starting briggs in cold weather :( :(

Kohler motors are good. There were issues with early courage series motors, but that's been resolved a while ago. Single cylinder motors from them have been solid.

I've got one on a DHT splitter I share with a buddy.

    So far, so good.

    ... but it's not a Honda.

13 cords thru that bad boy??? That's either a picture from before you used it the first time, or you spend as much time washing and waxing it as you do splitting wood with it!!!!!:D

Yes, that is a picture of right after I got done assembling it, before it split anything, just wheeled out of the shop and to the pile. I've never waxed it :)

I do have over 13 cords threw it. I put some 40" Maple rounds threw it a few weeks back, never even slowed down!! I really like this splitter!!

Maulhead, that vertical option looks really handy in the case of those mega rounds. We were splitting about 30" fresh cut oak rds with a horizontal only splitter a couple months ago. I was the one doing most of the lifting of the RDS to the splitter. Not fun. My parents have an mtd horizontal/ vertical splitter just like backwoods has, but it was 200 miles away, so not much help.

I agree with maulhead.I have the DHT splitter and I am suprised how well it has started in the xtreme cold.Ive fired her right up in single digits.
I'm not sure it is as efficient on the gas as the Briggs on my buddy's splitter but it's not too bad.
I can't complain too much so far.

I have an older one on the wheel horse that powers my splitter. No issues with it.

Kohler has come a long way in 20 years. They are one of the preferred motors in a lot of OPE these days.

I have an old wheelhorse from the 70's that won't die. Also have a kohler command on my zero turn no problems.I would trust a Kohler no doubt about it.

The introduction of the Command series twin-cylinders was a milestone for them. They still are the only small engine mfg using hydraulic lifters in the valve train.

I still like their classic iron, the K-series engines were wonderfully over-built cast iron masterpieces. Lots of them still out there running.

My Miller Bobcat 250 and my tractor have twin cylinder Kohlers ............. when I used to repair OPE, the Kohler engines that were in were allways only tune ups. Never any problems. Stout motors !!!
