I'm really surprised they were able to get the betas out this winter at all. After my visit to WS in Oct Lorin thought it may wait til next winter.

    What's required to be a "beta-tester"???

Right where I want to be.
The drawings on the left look slightly wider/shorter than the color rendition.
I'd prefer a front loader.....maybe just because the only 2 stoves I've owned are front loaders.

Side loaders rock for those of us without the need of N/S loads. I've had it both ways, plus the VC loads from the top, which is actually and even cooler feature of the downdraft stoves.

With us, the Ideal Steel is not a good choice because of being a front loader. However, it would work if the door could be hinged on the opposite side. Yet it does not appear Tom will be making this stove with the option there. Actually, a right hand side loader is perfect for us. The newer stove just might be the right one for us? Time will tell.

One thing Whitey is that it helps to have testers not too far from the factory so it is doubtful we'll be in the picture. However, don't let that stop you from contacting Woodstock if you tackle it.

I gingerly asked to be part of beta testing too but am way too far out of the geographical zone. I totally understand the logistics but I could not help but ask.

Technically I'm past the outer limits of the geographical zone too but I have a close friend in New York state who I visit a couple times a year. He's an hour and a half from Woodstock, so I can pick up and drop off stoves when I'm visiting. He just ordered an Ideal Steel stove too, so we'll be going up to pick up his new stove next time I visit.

I tried the throwing the arm on trick with having a manometer setup, tall stack, all kinds of different types of hardwoods and being in a historic log cabin in a brutal environment. In my mind it seems logical for sales up in the Midwest but as a former business owner I totally get it.

Yeah, that coupled with the idea that dramatically expanding sales is probably not Woodstock's main goal at this point in time. :)

Disclaimer: that is just my opinion and I have no knowledge of what Woodstock Soapstone does or does not want.

Well, it is a true testament to the company sending out stoves for folks to test out and allow them to post results in a public forum for all to see. Generally there is a level of confidentiality that happens in industry.

Growth is good but too much at once can be a problem.

I'm looking at this as a possibility for our new stove, was real close to ordering an ideal steel but the smaller size of this stove might fit our house better. I did get some dimensions on the stove, these are preliminary so take them with a grain of salt. height with legs 33.25", width 30.25" (with "Franklin" trim firebox itself is 21.75)" and depth is 27.38"with the ash lip no dimension is given without the lip but I'm thinking it's right about 22". So the "basic" version of the stove is probably somewhere around 33.25" high, 21.75 wide and about the same depth.

From what I am hearing with preliminary numbers, it looks as if the franklin hybrid may be a cleaner burner than the IS.

The IS is very clean burning so that is great news about the Franklin. What concerns us is the lower burn capabilities of the IS. We read a thread today on Hearth on this subject and it has us a little concerned about purchasing the IS. Do you know if the low end burn issue is being addressed in the new Franklin hybrid?

Lovinwood, please remember the stove is still in the early stage. Much work still to do.
