In the course of my trsvels today. I have seen 4 homes heating with what appears to be green wood

Im sure others have seen the same the ones where you can see there spitter sitting outside and a pile of rounds and a big stack of fresh split wood on their porch

I would have taken pics but kinda hard driving.

I dont get it. Why even mess with burning wood if your going to half arse it. More work more cleaning more wood comsumption and less btu's.

Its differemt if its a emergency I get that sometimes it happens

There's one I go by daily that has a massive heap of unsplit rounds partially tarped. Looks like a cinder block chimney with no cap that has black stains halfway down.. Needless to say it just spews smoke..

My grandparents' house used to be like that when I was a little kid. Back then that's how I thought everyone's chimney looked.

I had bought a house in the late 80's early 90's that not only burned wood from the basement but also a "newer" fireplace...not efficient by any means, but at least a couple vents to capture the heat from the flue. Understandably, the fireplace was pretty much unused but the flue coming from the basement was unbelievable! So much creosote that the roofing was actually stained with it! The guy had burned wood since probably WWII up until his death. You think that somewhere along the way he would have figured it out???

It really helps having the Internet-- we really have a lot of information easily within our grasps. When I first started I was given a lot of bad information but because I'm an information junkie I didn't let the subject lay and read everything I could. That how I got hooked up with this crew here-- Scotty Overkill and MasterMech were among the first to answer a lot of my questions. I feel I was placed in good hands.

Its a select group of people who are trying to get the EPA to increase the restrictions on wood stoves!

All wood burners are going to feel the effect of this ignorance (a point I have been trying to make and catching static over it) as we already are with the new regs. coming into play. Not sure how to solve it as regulations even if warranted are not well received especially by responsible people.
The next few years will be a crossroads I think.

Until stove manufacturers start explaining how to season and burn wood in their owner's manual this type of ignorance will persist.

I totally agree! When I got my insert installed, Pacific Energy had a section on fuel selection in the manual, although their recommendation was to season 6 months minimum, not the year + we all know it takes.

Not sure that will do it as no matter what it says in the manual many think green wood does not burn up so quick (duh) and wood rots after a couple of years.

The 6 month blanket statement is not much better then nothing as how you stack it what kind of wood it is and where you live all come into play but at least they mention it but need to give out a booklet with all the ins and outs of drying wood.
Where I live 6 months through the summer is as good a year.

I do think the stove manufactures need to get there head out of their ash as this is their livelihood that is at stake.

Maybe we need to approach the stove makers as might be the easiest way for us to get our point across.

Why have the stove mfgs draft something when the knowledge is right here? Many of you guys are the creative type, if you had a small pamphlet containing the condensed essentials of air-drying firewood, ready to distribute, it would be an easy addition to the documentation that comes with the stove.

They need to include your latest works on Responsible Wood Burning along with the user manuals.

Not just the manufacturers, but the sales people are just or even more important to get the message across. Remember, not everybody will read, especially manuals.

I have a brochure from one of the the big 3 major maple suppiers who recommend using " green or high moisture " wood in the " new and impoved gasification evaporator." Wth? I was at a maple conference recently in PA and asked the manufacturer rep why and his response was IDK ?

Do people read these ads and think well so and so recommends green wood must be good for the wood burner as well?
