Thought I'd start a new thread instead of jacking another.
Anyway, we have a few layers and generally don't use the eggs (the few we get go in the dog bowls), but would like to.
My wife has a phobia about how clean they should be before breaking them open. Are they supposed to be cleaned first, and how?
She's done research and it doesn't seem to be consistent.

I have no scientific background on this but I can tell you that when we eat them, there is almost no cleaning of the egg done. Now, if there is dirt/poo on the shell we will rinse under sink with water only and crack into the pan as usual. I sell about 6 dozen a week and all we do is wash with luke warm water and a towel. Nobody has gotten sick. If she is paranoid, have her boil some at first and go from there.

A lot of the time I eat them within 5 minutes of bringing them in the house from the coupe. With 3 kids and one on the way we go through a lot of eggs and milk, amongst other things. We`ve started raising meat chickens and milking our Nubian goats to offset some of the need (we freeze the milk in half gallon jars for later use).

So, a quick swipe with a damp cloth, then into the fridge should do it.
We eat eggs 2-3 times/week, and we aren't getting a ton right now.

We have about 26 layers no roosters. Most times if the eggs are in the nest boxes and clean we don't do anything. If dirty we bought some egg wipes from ranch store and follow directions on package. There is nothing like fresh eggs. Eat them all.

Been finding quite a few double yolks, but I don't remember which chickens they came from.
They're my wife's "deal", but I like eggs.
I'll need to pay closer attention next time I crack 'em open.

We don't raise chickens. My wife does want to start doing that some day. She has so much time on her hands with only three kids. She also wants two horses. :picard:Help me, please. I told her I would buy here a tractor or different work machine and all she has to do is turn the key when she wants to use it. And let it sit there when you don't and it doesn't need anything! Not the same.

I love eggs cooked many different ways. I have not had them poached and on toast in a while now. Time to do that soon. Three toast with one poached egg on each mashed with a fork and salt and pepper on them. Tasty!

We did buy them from a couple down the road many, many times for a while. But ended up too many times the timing wasn't right so we just started buying them at the super market again. We never did anything but rinse them under water, never got sick.

As kids, we always cleaned the freshly laid eggs. Also, as a kid, I never knew what the big deal was about the "farm fresh" eggs we sold to as many customers as we could. They sure did like 'em and didn't mind at all paying a little extra for them.

CRZY we thought about some meat chickens this year. Do you have a chicken plucker or do you pluck by hand?

I bought a plucker from ezplucker. LOVE it!! I bought it from their warehouse in Columbus OH (I think) and save over 75% cause it was dented and I didn`t have to pay shipping. I see you are in OH. If you aren't far from cconly I`d be calling to see if he has any dented units. He let me test it out and everything right on the spot. He threw 3 10 pound bowling balls in there and it didn`t even bother it.

I can slaughter 20 birds in about 2 hours myself and much faster with a helper. I can go faster but I need to make some more kill cones. I think I did about 225 to 250 last year and am looking to do about 500 this year.

    Same thing my wife says.
I made a couple a few years ago, and they ended up making their own all over the place.

I'd like to know more about how long they can be in the nest before being refridgerated?
