A friend and I have some medium(14-17") cherry logs we would like to saw into lumber but don't have a way to skid them. Anyone interested in helping out? There are good trails and roads. Any tractor/skidder/loader would work. Willing to pay in cash, beer, firewood... Or maybe someone has a a log arch that I could borrow/rent to pull behind an ATV? Any other ideas?
How far do they need moved? Is it something with the right amount of help it could be done maybe a dray setup. I have a 30 hp tractor but no trailer.
Go to the local scrap yard and get 2 old car or truck hoods. Roll the logs onto the hoods, put a chain on and haul them out with your atv? Cut to the length you need to saw and they shouldn't be too heavy. Or get a winch and hook onto a tree to lift them onto a wagon, one end at a time?
30 Hp tractor would work fine. Friend was able to skid one of the smaller logs with his ATV and rope. Maybe we can get the rest that way? If not, I will let you know. You're not too far from his place.
Hi Mike, I had a friend weld up a log arch for me a while back, photo below. It doesn't get much use here. When I come down for the piece of wood for our mantle I could loan it to you.
Cool. Thanks again. I'm thinking BrianK's log arch and the ATV is the place to start. I'll let you know if we need more muscle.
Ok cool not sure if I could get a trailer for next weekend either. But if you need muscle let me know. I got some hoist and ropes and stuff. I like rigging. A lot of old timers used car hoods for stone boats in the fields they work well.
The last 2 pictures are my dray I recently built with Backwoods Savage's design. Very easy to build and cost would be less than $40 if you needed to buy everything, harware, chain, eyebolts, 4x4, and 2x6. I loaded some big ash by myself just using a cant hook. Works great!
Cool. This thread has been much more fun than I thought. I think I'll be building a dray in the near future.
