Anyone ever made something like this. I think a handle out the back would be better. Seems like a lot of money to spend on a metal box with a hinge. I think one could be made fairly easy out of sheet metal. http://www.ashdragon.com/
I am thinking about using a piece of square duct work with an end cap screwed or welded on one end. The down side to this is its galvanized metal And kinda thin.
I've never seen that one before... something like that might make me clean ash out a little more often lol. Yeah duct tin is kinda thin for something like this, but it's easy to work with and if you have some extra laying around would be cheaper then buy light gauge steel! Come to think of it I've got a sheet of 26 gauge steel laying around... my try it myself if I get a chance! Post some pics if you get one made up!! ~Nathan
Good idea but I'd like a little longer handle so you don't have stick your whole hand/arm into the stove. My $0.02.
That thing looks big and awkward. I could see myself banging it into the door frame and hitting the baffle with the lid. My little 1 gallon bucket works better than that glorified pooper scooper.
I just clean the ashes like this, scoop the ashes into the pan, have another pan, slightly larger that fits over the top, take them outside, done.
That's close to what I do. I push all the ashes to one side and place the gallon bucket on the brick. Fill it up, let it settle and take it out to the big can. Another half can and the stove is empty. I keep trying to come up with an easier, cleaner way to clean out ash, but can't think of one.
Unfortunately, with my FP as it is, I'm stuck with the small ash shovel. I can lift up the door and drop it down the ash chute. But then I have to scoop it up downstairs and bring it upstairs. Albeit later. So for me it's win now, lose later.
Just trying to keep from making a ton of dust on cleanout. Got the sheet metal for free and a buddy is going to bend it for me. Probably won't be so clean looking but should be functional.
You could surely make one for less than 80 bucks I don't put ashes in a container in the house any more , push coals to one side, scoop ashes up in the big shovel , straight out the back door ,into the ash bucket , no dust flying around
Yea if it wasn't for being able to do it on the cheap, I would have just used a big shovel like yours and folded the sides up some.
It seems like I saw some home made copies of those on the other forum ,a long time back and the part that closed up was a sliding door deal , and one with hinges brazed on
