I think my wife would probably watch more if we could get cable but it isn't going to happen in this area for a long, long time.
And when I'm really at peace out in the stacks I start sniffing the 'good stuff' usually some cherry Then you know your in the zone!
I like the part about the memories of cutting wood with my dad. Riding on the old Ferguson tractor with the wagon to the back of the 50 acres he owned. Watching him cut down tree with a double bit axe telling me stories of his dad. Hearing him cuss the really old craftsman saw that ran only when choose to. Me feeding the small logs to him while he cut hoping the saw would quit so I could get a drink of water. I am 51 and still cutting wood cussing the saw and hoping it runs out of gas so I can get a drink of water.wouldnt tade it for anything though. Sure do miss my dad.
"Sure do miss my dad."... same here markr ... everyday. 25 years now. My memories are still as tho he was here yesterday, and I'm very thankful for that.
Good thread. Back in December, my brother had some oaks taken down on his property. We spent a nice afternoon with his BIL cutting and splitting the limbs. When the saws weren't running, it was cold and quiet with flurries falling. We talked about seasoning wood, splitting mauls and chainsaws. We caught a few whiffs of the neighbors wood stove to make it all that much nicer. I was young in the early 1970's and I remember the oil embargo. My dad had wood delivered in 6-8 foot lengths and he cut it and we split and stacked. He had the Homelite XL at the time. He bought a Jotul 602 and burned that for over 30 years. Little did we know, he was teaching us to be ready for situations like that. I made a wood storage box that I use everyday using the side plate of the old retired 602.
I like that wood box. For sure sure about teaching us to be prepared. My dad grew up in the depression. You didnt throw anything away.
My "wood lot" is my area of zen. Just peaceful being out there, a sense of accomplishment while enjoying nature. Now, this lot is no more than maybe an eighth of an acre where I bring my rounds back to split and stack, but I get lost out there sometimes. Few get it, you guys do.
A wise man once said " mmmmm donuts". thanks Homer simpson. I say "mmmmmm firewood". Btw I like donuts too.
Im so glad this thread has brought back some memories for everyone. I have really been lifted reading what others have shared and the different memories Its amazing something so simple as firewood can affect ones life in so many ways. Thank you guys for reading and sharing your memories and thoughts
Got some mental cleansing tonight. Scored a load and a half of soft maple. Not great wood but it will burn in my outdoor pit and my small wood burner in the garage. Was the absolute highlight of my day C/S/S
Nice thread lots of memories. Most times for me I can take out the frustration of the week. Refresh my mind and remember all that I am thankful for.
I like for my kids to be with me when I don't have trees to drop. They help as best they can and get to play as the want. I am probably considered a little different by most of my neighbors around my age. The one saw me splitting by hand one day and laughed said "splitter broken again?" Just replied nope and went back to splitting. It was one of those days you just catch your stride and don't want to be bothered. I to think it is very peaceful to put wood up. Be it alone or with my kiddos.
