I`m not knocking this guy or his saw but would think that a saw that size wouldn't bog like it is when cutting. Especially seeing how the weight of the tree is on the far end of the cut (or could that be causing a pinching situation?). What could he do different to keep the saw from grabbing the wood and stopping? Too low of rakers? Too aggressive chain in another way?

Reason I`ve noticed this is I just agreed to buy one, a 394xp, on Saturday and don`t want to have to high of hopes if this is what I have to look forward to. I expect it to pizz rev in front of it and the wood cut it self every 20"!!

In the first couple of cuts, I thought it looks like he was leaning heavy into the top cuts - the saw seems to do better in the under cuts. Wonder if part of the problem was not letting the saw do the cutting and putting too much weight on the top cuts. Also, on the top cuts, he's not getting the chain spinning good before entering the cut (from what I saw) - heavy saw though, so the saw's going to be grabby when he first throttles up. Seems to be throwing some good chips - chains seems sharp - who knows if he set the rakers low. Might be running a bit rich, but seems to be running pretty well. Cheers!

I have a friend his saw would do the same. It was a husq too but in the saws defense he didnt mainatain it hardly any.

To me it sounds like its working pretty hard. Cant quite tell but looks like the chain is not as sharp as it could be. In my mind he should be zipping through with a saw that size.

Im not a expert and i know someone here will give a pretty good reason here shortly. A lot of knowledgable guys here

All I can say is he must have graduated the Jethro Bodine School for Arborists! No safety gear, except a helmet, cutting on the down hill side of that huge log (one section almost rolled over his foot which could have knocked him over!) The guy is a chucklehead which speaks to why the saw is bogging!

I would say that he has taken the rakers totally off.The saw is running fine but the chain has no rakers.

IMHO, its a great combination for a learning video

    Low rakers
    Rich tuned saw
He-Man likes to lean on the dogs
And for the love of humanity, cut from the top side of the hill o_O

After I posted this I was hoping someone would say that this would be a good, what not to do, video. Also, I was curious to know if you all thought he may have the saw too rich.

I`m not sure I have a saw powerful enough to pull a chain with no rakers. Isn't that really hard on the rest of the saw?

I noticed he was on the wood no chain speed before hitting it.

I tried videoing myself cutting the other night, it was horrendous! I had previously rocked my chain, we have jumping rocks here, and I only filed it to get it sharp again without taking it back all the past the slight damage to the top plate. Then I went out to cut with my freshly sharp CHAINS and sent the smoke flying! I learned that you must take all the bad places out of the chain, my 562xp can`t burn through 20" oak, I look like an idiot with a dull chain, my saw can flex a lot when I push on it! It is actually a classic, what not to do when cutting.

Looks like a pig rich brand new 395. I'll bet he doesn't even know what depth gauges are, let alone to grind them.

Yep. Lots of fail right there. Operator error for sure. Not the powerhead.
I could've been thru that log with my 361 faster than that idiot with 30 plus cc's on me.

    I agree. Lots going wrong.

A little lean on the dogs is a lot of leverage with a bar that long. He would be better off letting the saw do the work, rather than digging in and rocking.

Maybe the saw/chain has a problem but the nut on the handle dang sure aint helping. A little consistency, less stabbing at it, would go a long way. For the few moments when he is using the right amount of pressure, the saw looks/sounds decent (at least much better).

Don't worry bow hunter you should love your new 394. The saw in video is too rich and he should let the saw cut instead of dogging into it like that. Here is mine playing with some white oak. image.jpg I walked up to that tree with the 394 running and it just jumped right off the stump lol!
