Finaly got the old four wheeler fixed broke for a year no pics so it never happened. Went cutting today! The river froze over so I could get some standing dead elm.
Love the dead standing elm. That stuff is going to get me through until I get my 3 yr stash set. Even after that, is great heat, nice sized, but if it needs splitting, that's all gas splitter work. I did a bunch of work on Saturday, as it was warmer, 36 and not windy. Is the river you speak of the Milwaukee river?
That's exactly what I'm burning this year along with some dead and/or down ash. Sounds like we're on the same plan!
I used to spend a lot of time on the mke river at CTY hwy m and state hwy 33 in the winter on sleds. I've got a feeling you are close to that.
Splitting elm with hydraulics is not always necessary. If the bark is off the wood is usually much easier to split unless that tree happened to be out in the open. Before we got the hydraulics, I split many, many logs of elm with a splitting maul and the only hard ones to split were where any knots were. and you are right, it is good firewood.
Horkn: about a half mile west. East of the airport. I have land on both sides of the river and there's four bends on my property. Were really getting hammered by the emerald ash borer here.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure I know your barn in your avatar. I am friends with the heterbrueg's, who used to own a bigger farm right there. You probably know/ knew them if your been there a while. No EAB here....yet.
All my elm is dry dead standing and nearly 100% barkless by the time I get it. The best a maul can do is chip around the outside, and that's futile. Unless you need kindling. It's great burning wood though.
If I want to get out of bed in the morning I'll stick with the hydraulics.I'm getting soft. Ed used to farm my land now I grow pumpkins and corn myself as a hobby. Becides I have seven tractors I need to work them.
