Just thought I would pass on a little info.I had several 5 gal buckets of permachink in basement,well over 10 years old.The log part of my cabin sat open for over 10 years,so drying,shrinking,rolling has been ongoing.I "quick chinked inside and outside,after enclosing cabin,to make liveable.Had second coated chink on most of outside some years later.So,one of the buckets of chink was bad,a piece of steel went through the lid.The second one,over 1/2 full,I had put paper towels and water on top.When I opened it a few days ago,all moist with a coat of oil.(after local store and permachink told me to throw them out).Mixed up with my mud(drywall) mixer and big drill.Came out great,stuff I chinked inside has been drying at a normal rate.The second bucket(full) had 2 hard spots,and oil floating on surface.Scraped out hard,added a little linseed oil and 1 cup water,mixed,lookes really good,will be inside chinking tomorrow.Do not just throw things away!!!
It can be amazing what you can do sometimes with old stuff. We had a neighbor move away a couple years ago and one thing we got was a full gallon of paint. It had never been opened but it was old. Maybe older than me?! I still used it. When I made a new sawbuck last summer I used that old paint. Some I almost had to use a putty knife to get it out because it was dried out. Still, I put it on and only used one coat but that's still better then buying some new paint. Even when I made the dray a few years ago, I used old stuff and the only dollars it cost was for some bolts.
My parents used some old chinking to fix their place as well. The chinking on the south side of their house got really bad bubbles for the first few years, so they stripped it all off and used extra they had in the basement to re-apply. Log homes take a lot of different type of work than a stick built home!
Too many beers,took too long,and really sucked chinking behind pipes.Told peole on ham radio that 20" logs can shrink and twist over 1" and they did not believe me(natives).Finished the last bucket today,spent 9 hrs(have to include moving things and cleanup) happy how it turned out,but will tell you I could do 4 times as much outside,inside work sucks!But got cold as I was ending up and had to fire up the pellet stove.All permachink I "ressurected" is drying at a normal time period,so very happy i did not just haul the buckets to the dump.And Wild,not real sure about the blanket,might have been something from camper remodel,will check pictures and get back to you.Sorry.As far as Bass,I have helped work on 6-7 log cabins and never seen chinking "bubble".Very strange. '
