What's the stuff called for burial Ethernet. Nobody appears to have any around me. I need to bury some in the spring and I can't run it through the same conduit as the power according to code.

    The conduit or the cable?

The grey pipe? I don't know, but I used it for my tomatoes. Since it was cheap.

I would bury a cat6 cable in a schedule 80 pipe. Some cat6 cabled claim to be direct bury but I think it's risky.

Right where I want to be.
Yep, put it in a pipe.
I should have done that when I built the pole barn.:headbang:

    Have used this before:
    http://www.cat5ecableguy.com/inc/sdetail/81356

"Flooded" cat5 is rated for direct burial but conduit is always better.

I have run this thru a lake before and had no issues.
cat6 is the new standard, but unless you are going to be running gigabit speeds, the extra cost is not worth it IMHO.

The installation should last for many years, and I bet he will be regretting going cheap five years from now.

True with the speed upgrades that keep coming out.
In the area that I live, we can't get any high speed internet except HughesNet... There is a tower for wide area wireless being build 1.5 miles away from home, but the feed to that tower is still copper, not fiber. They keep pushing back the completion date- would love to get rid of this damm dish on the roof.
I set my house/garage to be all wireless- used several range extenders to make sure I didn't have to put any cable outside.

Did you look into running a wireless bridge with directional antennas? Might be a better solution.

CAT 5 is only good for 300'...CAT6 will get you a bit further.

    Not in wireless range?

I'm really looking for a hard line as I always have wireless issues at the worst times...
We are probably in range with an extender but I'd like to keep a hard line to the garage anyways with a router for wireless out there to feed the rest of our yard as well. The garage is 60' from the house

If that is a second router in the garage, make sure that it acts as a secondary(I think that's the right term, can't remember right now). Otherwise the two routers will fight back and forth on a device that picks up them up and you end up with no internet(found that out the hard way)

My first thought was, Cat5e can be had for free more often than not, and would supply plenty of bandwidth for internet over wifi to a couple devices (ie. smartphones/tablets). And PVC conduit is cheap! If you're using conduit, pulling a new cable down the road is a piece of cake.

But there are a lot of guys in this thread already that know a lot more about this stuff than I do!

My internet (from a wireless ISP) comes into the pole barn, about 50' from my house. The subscriber module plugs into a wireless router in the pole barn. In the house I have a D-Link 632 running DDWRT in routed client bridge mode. That gives me wired connections for the satellite receiver and also acts as a wireless repeater. The bonus is I have wi-fi through the whole house, pole barn and most of the yard. No wires needed.

I used to have a couple cat 5 runs between the house and barn in a PVC conduit, but I forgot to mark them when I had a new patio installed a couple years ago and the excavators found them in about two minutes. :(

I ended up with bulk reels from amazon last summer, ran tv, internet and landline telephone to the RV. Not sure if it was the best price but it was convenient.

I get both tv and internet from satellite dishes.
