We have always used Turbo Tax to process and file our taxes. This year our situation is quite simple with just our 2 incomes, some short term games form stocks and pitiful interest earning on our savings account. I say that there should be a free service at the irs for simple filings like ours. What do you do?

I used TaxAct also,3rd year in a row. Filed both Fed & State on Tuesday afternoon (got my W-2 back from employer almost 2 weeks sooner than last year's).Returns were accepted & the refunds should be in my checking account in another week or so.... :dex:

It takes a lot of the sweating and knashing of teeth to figure out the IRS forms don't it? One thing I forgot to mention is that to E file federal taxes is free but, at least here in Iowa it costs a small fee to E file state taxes. At least it did the last couple of years we have used it. But if you want to get around the nominal fee for the state all you gotta do is print out your return, copy it to a state tax form and send it in.

Most years when I know I'm getting refunds I'll file within a day or two of getting my W-2's back.Dont mind paying that fee for electronic filing then. But when I know I'll be paying,I still use their software to figure the return & print out 3 copies - 2 to mail in,1 to keep for my records. And I wait until 4/15 & 4/30 to mail my Fed & State returns/check in then. ;)

Its MY money,I want it back fast. But when I owe, they can wait for it!!

Years ago you could not itemize (sched a) on the free version. Hopefully that has changed.

Ya think? Even if you do have health insurance that isn't through a work place that is a self payer you are still a part of the system. The big goobermint hand has turned into a jack booted thug. OOPPS, getting political. I will shut up now. Sorry.

I get my tax return...for the most part....one paycheck at a time. I have my federal withholding set pretty low and don't get too much of a return.

Another vote for taxact. Turbo tax is getting too expensive.

I use taxact, and have used both HRBlock and Turbo Tax. I'll give Taxact and HRBlock a thumbs up, but Turbo Tax has messed things up for me twice, and it's not fun fixing that stuff with the IRS.

Like lukem, I try to set up my W4 withholdings so that I either get very little back, or owe just enough that my state return covers it. It's disgusting how much money I pay to the Federal government each year!

Try to steer this back in a firewood direction here... If you itemize, you may be able to claim storm damage and beetle kill trees you own as a casualty loss, especially if your homeowner's doesn't cover it. But you have to try to submit a claim with your homeowner's first.

I used a CPA here for years. I trust them and for what they charge I did not mine paying it. My wife did them a few years using one of the software thingy ma jingies. I don't know which one it was. It worked. Then as things got a little busier with kids and all we went back to using the CPA. Now with two pieces of property we will stick with them. It is piece of mind with everything done by them and they have there copies at the office. They do the e-filing. Works good. We usually get a small return, nothing big. We pay some serious taxes between the two of us. But there are some good benefits to taxes as well. You guys sound like a guest on the Johnny Carson show or something.

    Big hand. Pfffff.
