In Memory of Christian "Chick" Siebert My good friend Chick Siebert passed recently, he was 99. We shared meals through the years, firewood, a trip to the train museum, evenings around his elaborate handmade trolley collection and lots of great conversations. He loved fires in his fireplace and would scrounge curbside wood in the trunk of his car. Many nights he would stoke up a big fire and spend the night in front of it. I know on this forum many of you will likely never have heard of Chick, but I thought I would share a few of my favorite quotes from him. After we had to take him home early from church because he wasn't feeling well, and I called him the next morning... Me: Hey Chick, its Greg Chick: It wasn't mortal, only a bad hot dog After discussing investment strategies... Me: So what's your investment strategy Chick? Chick: I only buy telecom stocks. I figure good times or bad, people always want to talk about it. (he followed this from 1940s on and did well) During a steak dinner out at a local restaurant... Chick: There's something on my steak (loud enough for everyone to hear) Me: Like what? Chick: They dipped it in something Me: I think you ordered a marinated steak Chick: Let me try yours. (After trying a bite) Yeah, yours is better Me: You eat half of mine, I'll eat half of yours Chick: Yeah, that would be good. My favorite, after me observing he was not smoking his pipe as usual one night.... Me: Chick, where's your pipe? Chick: Doc said its making me cough, and that I should stop smoking it. Me: How long have you smoked a pipe? Chick: About 75 years Me: How did you quit after 75 years? Chick: I stopped lighting it. Chick lost is wife Kay at far too young an age, but never was bitter about it, at least in my presence. I remember one day not long before he moved to be with his son one last exchange I will share.... Me: Your looking good today Chick Chick: Not doing too bad, but you know, you don't want to live too long I hope to live a life like his and be as ready to go some day as he was. I give thanks to God for Chick's life, faith and friendship. And thank God that Chick is now home with Him.
Sorry for the loss of your good friend, Chick sounded like quite a character, hang in there my friend.
Sounds the kind of man who changes lives. Sorry for your loss, lovely that you can shre such fantastic stories - the pipe one is a classic.
Great story about, no doubt, a great man. I really do not want to say sorry for your loss. You haven't really lost because you have so many memories and I doubt that at his age it came as no surprise.
He was a few days past 99, and had told people he did not want to see 100 if it were up to him. His son who he stayed with was in his late 70's I believe. Two retired guys under one roof! I know he didn't want to die in a negative sense, but I also know he looked forward to the time he would be called home.
That's great Greg. Sort of reminds me of an old neighbor we had when I was a young lad. The man had almost quit farming because he just could not do much any more and he died, I believe at the age of 76 or 78. His father attended his funeral.
