Ok I had an upper mount go bad so I replaced it.Well the new one just puked so I had the wife buy one at the stihl dealer chalking it up to a cheap one from an online retailer. STIHL dealer said I must have another bad mount to cause it to break so quick. So today while installing the new top mount sure enough the rubber mount by the oil filler cap is squishy and moving about. I figure its from degredation of the oil. So what I want to know is do I have to gut my saw to change the 2 front mounts or can it be done fairly easily?
Man it's been a couple years since Ive had an 038 on the bench but IIRC you change the mounts out without tearing the whole saw apart. Take the screws out, pull the mounts out one at a time and fish 'em back in. Silicone spray or a string can help big time.
I found a screw in the one bushing that moves alot by the oil cap.So I figure it must be able to come out fairly easily.I am not sure on the one opposit of it.Looks like it's captured in there.Maybe it comes out if I take the starter housing off?
You have the drop the tank if I remember correctly. I believe the mounts come out from the inside. I could be wrong but I think that's how I replaced mine. It's been a while since I had my 038.
Well poo.I guess if I have to drop the tank off I won't be changing them very quickly.sounds like a bench job. I have gotten several trees to drop tomorrow so I guess it will have to wait till a later date.I thought if it was a quick fix I would try and swap them out. That was only if the local dealer was open and has parts in stock.
I changed mine a few years back, and I do not remember dropping the tank ........... If my memory serves me correctly, Master Mechanic posted all that's needed. Mine went bad due to a fin missing from the flywheel ......... didn't even notice it until I replaced the mounts. Put in a new flywheel with the three mounts and I thought I was running my 044
