I still want to try a dust collector setup for my USG. It turns the bench it's mounted on into a mess pretty quick.

My sharpener (511a) is mounted on an old header made from (2) 2x8's
Its about 4 feet long so I can attach it to any vise I am around, at home, at work, etc..
In the field I use a big "C" clamp to hold it to something, or bolt it to a tree with a couple of lag bolts

Its the easiest, most universal setup for me !

Don't the diamond or ABM wheels make less mess ?

Still running the ones that came with my USG. I've about worn out the first set and I have one more. I want to try the diamond wheels but they just aren't in the budget at the moment.

I hear you ............ I have about 7 or 8 wheels left (probably last me at least the next dozen years) for 3/8 on my 511a. Then I will probably have enough scratch to get a diamond wheel for it.

I have not been using my sharpener lately, except to use the rails to set rakers ................ filing by hand indoors takes over in the slower and colder winter days.

    I need a chain vise from homey:thumbs:

One of these days, I'm gonna make up a stand and mount it to the floor. Nothing special, just some substantial square tube with plates welded on each end. That'll keep the mess off the bench and easier to clean up, and fabbing a dust collector should be easier, if I think I need to.

Got nothing special at the moment, just bolted to the corner of a bench. Not even worth a picture.

Hand filing I like on the bar in rotating vise. I dont bench mount my USG grinder, it is on the wall out of the way and chains can hang down.

I thought about setting up a dust collection system. But to do it right it needs to be ducted outdoors to keep fine particulates out of the indoor air.

I like your setups. I inherited a "chainsaw" workbench when I bought my property. Old Neilsen grinder doesn't have many adjustments but it cleans up a .325 chain beautifully. After sharpening 3 chains yesterday I am definitely ready to remount it right at eye level.

Just make sure you wear some eye protection.:binoculars:

One more tip I forgot about. The Tecomec and Oregon style grinders have way too much travel in them. So I took a blue shoelace, (you can see in pics) to stop the grinder head from extending all they way. When you grind, now you only have to move the grinder about 3" rather than 8".:)

The most effective, cheapest, and passive dust collector for your chain grinder are a couple big magnets setting on top of the mounting bolts. I like the ones like come off the wave outlet of a magnetron tube of a microwave oven or something that size.

If anyone needs some kick azz magnets shoot me a holler. I can get them from work cheap. We use them for temporary pipe line patching. I can stuff a couple in a flat rate box for about $5 shipping. Just don't get your fingers between the magnet and steel, give it room to run and it will honest to god break your fingers.
