Just a random tidbit. I agree that looks like some mulberry - just a picture of seasoned mulberry to show you how it changes color like others have already said. This is some seasoned mulberry next to some decently seasoned red oak in one of my stacks. The mulberry starts out very yellow like yours but turns a darker almost chocolate brown as it dries.
Not too far from Greencastle actually. I did end up splitting one like the pics above and got similar readings. The mulberry was consistently in the low 30's. The other were 21-24%. Im still going through some of the old Oak that was left but have been mixing some from the new once fire is going. Im gonna try to check out the ad listed as "split 2 years ago" Thanks again for all the pics and advice, already have learned alot
Keep an eye on Craigslist in the spring for some really good scrounges in the Frederick area. With the heat we get during the summer I seem to have good luck with fast seasoning times. If you can grab some ash or silver maple early in the year it will be ready by November for sure. You said you're close to Greencastle so if you need some help pm me and I'll do what I can to get you heading in the right direction.
I agree with this. All of the wood sellers I deal with seem to think dry wood comes from leaving it in the round for a couple years then splitting and loading it. It's sad they don't know how to season the wood. What I can't understand is that they have it in the round for so long, wouldn't it be just as easy to split it since it will have to be split anyway before loading. They could practically name their price if it was split and stacked for a year or two.
That stuff looks like it was dead for a while before it was even split , might be good to go, take your meter with you split one and see what it is
Penweld in Sayville. He's a marine welding/pipe fabrication guy, makes hardtops, T tops, rocket launchers... for boats. Does great work. I've had him make me lots of stuff. I was just kidding buddy!! That's a joke I always throw at my Nassau Cnty friends.... Like you, they don't find it as amusing as I do!
I don't think that it is seasoned either. I definitely would not burn the cleaning chemicals or the clothes basket in a wood burner either.
