Hey all! Great Sunday morning to go out and get a load of wood here in the midwest. Pretty sure the logs on the right are walnut, but not quite sure what the yellow stuff is on the left. Any ideas. Also, just for kicks, thought I'd share my stash! (not exactly the greatest photographer in the world) IMG_0096.jpg

Hey Stump the yellow stuff looks like mallberry. It burns pretty good. My pa says it stinks when you burn it but I've never noticed.

On the right is for sure walnut. My guess is black locust on the yellow. Looks nearly identical to my thread about wood id... Nice haul for our neck of the woods!

That is without a doubt mulberry, and it has a very pleasant smoke.

Why is the center of the cuts dark in so many pictures I see?

Yep Walnut and Mulberry, a very nice combo there. Mulberry, if you BBQ or smoke save some of that back and throw on the coals. Its kinda of like Apple wood.

Here because it is walnut. Also, the center of the cuts is what is called the heart wood. The size of the heart will vary a lot from tree to tree. One good example I can give is with hard maple. Back in the days when I was logging (No, we did not use dinosaurs for skidding the logs) one time we cut a good sized hard maple and could hardly believe how small the heart was. We sold to several different mills and new right where we wanted to take this one. We got only one log before the first limb but that one log brought us $550. Now if you realize that was over 50 years ago, that was some serious dollars for one log! Yes, it made us very happy and also made a nice paycheck that week.

So as you get wood from time to time, pay attention to the heart in the different wood and it may surprise you how different each can be.

Back in the day (dennis' time), old growth trees had some big sized heartwood compared to todays trees.
