Yeah, I think that's the best option. I'll definitely take a ton of pics if we do build it. It probably won't be until spring though. Getting it done as soon as we can will get both of our piles bigger for the next year or 2.

I don't think you can. If you could, I might seriously consider buying an ariens 22 ton. Kohler motors are made just down the road from the rest of the ariens splitters, just one county north of me. They only make great products, IME.

I figured I'd revive this thread versus create a redundant one....I've got a chance to get a 22-ton DHT splitter for $854 plus tax. Do they all have kohler engines? What else do I need to look for?? Thanks in advance...

(Edit) also... This is from Lowes - are their models the same as you'd get anywhere else (not cheaper made ones like their John Deere mowers, husky saws, etc)???

Yes on Kohler and the splitter is the same minus the log catcher. They make it an option instead of standard.

$854 for a 22 ton dht is a good deal. Menard's has the 22 ton forest king for 700, but it's far from the quality of the dht from what I hear.

Love my DHT. I've had nothing but flawless performance out of it from the start.

Appreciate the info. I'm tempted to pull the trigger on this splitter but I don't NEED it, as I have an old splitter that attaches to the 3 pt hitch of the tractor. Decisions decisions....

Vertical is mega useful if you are splitting big heavy rounds. Most 3pt splitters are just horizontal, and you'll have to lift the lunkers up. That's tough on your back.

If you need an excuse that is.

One thing that may help tip you one way or the other... What about the cost of fuel? Running a 3 point splitter can burn a lot of fuel depending on the tractor you use. Another thing is going through the hassle of hooking it up every time or tying up a tractor by just leaving it on.

Yea that's a good point. Just filled up the farm diesel tank at $2.64/gal. Not cheap at all. And yep it usually takes 2 people to hook that thing up unless I want to strain my guts out to hook that top link. That new splitter is looking better and better every comment!! Thanks guys

Decided to hold off on the splitter. It's a good buy but I don't need one and can use the money elsewhere. We'll see what the prices on em do this summer :smoke:
