woodstove fireworks

    I have a 4" coal bed that im trying to burn down in preparation for a night load. Stove is turned up, and I did my normal rake forward method. Ive had sparks before on occasion, but damm, tonight sparks went flying at me the first time, so I quick used the door as a shield. Opened the door again for a final rake and POOF..... these got me. Im ok, but definitely burned a few beard hairs (smelled em) and one must have flew either in my eye or on my bottom eye lid. Knocked me back too, a reflex i suppose. Damm, first time for everything I guess!o_O

    Thanks...... coals are getting there. 12°F out, still 75°F in here. So mulberry a sparker too huh? Just putting together a list of wood here I need to wear full ppe with. ;)

    Some woods have little pockets of dried resin deep inside. They usuall explode deep inside the wood as it heats up. This is the crackle you hear in an open fire. In secondary burn & cat stoves the fuel is not as hot as an open fire, the real heat is from the secondaries or cat. When you open your door you let air get to the wood and it quickly gets hot. Some pockets that have not yet hit that explosive temp quickly get there, explode, and throw some hot embers around.

    Happens quite a bit with my Oak.
    My pajama bottoms have little burn holes in 'em.
    Better them than me.:thumbs:

    Tulip Poplar does that for me. I guess that's what puts the "Pop" in poplar...I must have a piece in there now, it seems rather active tonight.:wacky:

    Yep I get that with locust and sugar maple. It makes me nervous as I'm always afraid of one popping out on the carpet and me to seeing it. I worked with a fellow many years ago that had his son's house burn down from an ember that got on the carpet and they didn't notice it right before the were leaving the house.
