Colder here. What's your temp? What ya burnin?

Temps bottomed out at -10 below then started rising.Minus 4 when I woke up,still had a nice pile of coals.70 in here.Threw on some white oak/maple slivers & 3 small punky elm rounds.Took right off. Back to the mixed Red/Black/White/Bur Oak mix,with the occasional Shagbark/Mulberry added.

6 above now,windchill minus 15.

 

Is that big round shagbark hickory? We have the other hickory here. That looks a lot like Ironwood....and I guess has similar heating capabilities. Nice chunk of wood.

 

Yup its shagbark,about 6.5" roughly.Also a small amount of Ironwood/Hophornbeam growing in the understory on parents land where I cut,none are over 6-7" diameter now,most are 3"-4".

I only cut 1 or 2 a year of those that gets damaged/destroyed from heavy ice/snow or wind storms. Very similar to Hickory in density/heat value.None I have are big enough to really tell though.It makes excellent tool handles,mallets & anything that's subject to abuse etc. also.

 

Yes, I love Ironwood. I have alot in the 12 diameter range. It usually dies before it gets much bigger than that. Have at least one that is about 14 inches, but don't know how much longer it will last. I hardly ever cut my ironwood...wait for it to fall. It will stay solid for a very long time. Ten years or so standing dead makes great firewood when it eventually comes down. It will keep well on the ground for a good period longer as well. Great stuff. My sons used it for lashing projects, such as boat racks. I've always regretted I haven't the skills and tools to use the ironwood for bowls, tools, kitchen utensils, etc. Love the wood.

rdust, Accuweather had a realfeel of -50, I'm not sure what it actually ended up being.

I woke up about 3 in the morning and the temp outside was reading -22.5.

When I got my sorry arse out of bed this morning it was -17, the basement was 79, the living room and the bedroom were both 67.

We had both the wood stove and the pellet stove running yesterday and last night.

 

Whew that's cold! Hope you keep that crap up there!

We have a Lake Effect Warning for tomorrow and Saturday.... 7-14 inches.

Even though we want the snow, I think it will stay well south of us.

We did have some fun loading the Liberty up with Beech and American Hophornbeam. ( Ironwood )

Last year the cold stayed, this was a quick hitter and out of here.

 

This could be coming up to your neck of the woods this weekend.

 

Boy the wind is taking its toll on the other end of the house today, not as warm as usual

 

Well, she was a long day. Finally got the pipes to unfreeze about 11:30 then off to work. At least the snap appears to be over for now. Temp is about 13f right now and is supposed to stay there over night with a couple of inches of snow.

Made it up to 12º outside today.....just hangin there now. Got the stove about 3/4 full of ash and cherry this evening. Worked out I was able to stop by at lunch and throw a few pcs on. Not supposed to be quite as cold as last night we were about -2º.....8 to 10º tonight so I read.

 

We're at 14 degrees tonight, just the wood stove tonight.

We might get hit with this.

thewoodlands We have had a few inches of snow fall today and still a little coming down now. Are you getting it there too?

I talked to a guy who lives down near Watertown today. He said they got two feet recently and are expecting two more feet by Saturday. So I asked him if he used a snow blower or a plow. He said there is no such thing as a snow blower. It's a snow thrower.Oookay.

That ain't right Alan. How are you guys doing out there? Have you and W.W. been baking so many goodies it is warming your temperatures up out there?

 

It snowed all day but never amounted to much. The old Lake Effect machine is hammering the Watertown area, we're in the warning area for 7-14 inches.

 

Have you had enough snow to ride your snowmobile?
