In the last 10 days my 9 year old well pump, 5 year old washing machine and 3 year old flatscreen tv have all quit working. Can't we make anything that lasts anymore? /rant off (guess I'm getting too old)
Washing machines are junk now days and built for a 10 year life if that... My buddy works for a particular washing machine company and that's what the pumps are rated at for max life's even on the high end ones. When we found out that little tidbit we went to a refurbished dealer and got a good rebuilt one for less than half new cost. It's been 4 years and still runs like new. Here's to better luck Mike.
The washing machine has been nothing but trouble. The 'spider gear' was made out of 100% chinesium and dissolved within the first 2 years. The first pic shows the replacement and original side by side. Hard to tell they are the same part. When it disintegrated metal chunks get in all the bearings and into the drain pumps rotor. The shaft was slightly bent but I got three more years out of it but it's time ran out. sad but true that most manufacturing companies don't want their stuff to last that long. They get to sell stuff more often if it doesn't last.
What bugs me is you can't ever tell if your buying a quality product. Too many companies are willing to sacrifice their reputation for short term profits. The tv ended up being a somewhat simple fix. The ribbon cable for one of the backlights had a short and overheated. Once I unplugged the cable the tv would turn on but the left half of the the tv is a little dim. Of course the cable is NLA from the manufacturer so I will have to re route the cable and cut off the damaged section and hopefully it all works. But to do it I will have to completely disassemble the entire TV to get access.
Don't feel bad.............I've got a wife, a girlfriend and a BIG bank loan, and they are ALL 3 months overdue ! LOL
I'll say it again, I am so thankful for youtube. I have fixed so many things that would have cost me a bundle to hire done. I also go to Amazon and more often than not am able to find the parts I want cheaper than anyplace else.
DIY is a big $$ saver. Internet & parts suppliers & a little patience Throw away society At least the lower 48 recycles tons of stuff. Here, not much recycle, aluminum cans & plastic bottles. Land fills will be like gold mines in a few hundred years.
I guess I'm cursed, wife couldn't get up the last hill before our house becuase of snow and ice at 1 am this morning. When she backed into a driveway to wait for a plow she got a flat tire... And I broke the table crank handle on my drill press yesterday, cheap plastic was brittle after 20 years.
I hear locust firewood last some time. . The only I have had stand the test of time is a 1940's ish air compressor. Anything bought in my lifetime has been junk more or less. Maintenance helps but I feel that to be only delaying the inevitable.
