I understand everyone's frustration at this issue......many of you know where I stand in regards to these things......but let's keep it a healthy thread. This IS an issue that needs to be seen and heard, but as with every issue there are two sides to every story. And we've seen threads like this go south in a hurry. So keep it clean and politics - free please.....

In regards to these woodburning "bans" everwhere, as we've already talked about in another thread, the public only gets shown one side of things. I think EDUCATING woodburners on proper burning techniques, seasoning, and the like would be healthier for the WHOLE LOT of us burners. Going after different facets (some of the irresponsible OWB burners out there who burn green fresh wood and trash in their burners for one) that give other OWB and woodburners a bad name, I can see some stricter regs involving that kind of stuff. But an outright "ban" tells me there is a big push from an organization (I.E. lobby, special interest group, etc.) Behind the scenes here. So all we can do is write these politicians and express our dislike towards this push.

That said, I will add that there is a GLOBAL PUSH against biomass heating in the works......It's not just here. And its wrong, IMO. Those of us that are responsible burners are getting the shaft, as are those that cannot afford any other means of heating/cooking. And ANYONE who does some research can see that wood, when seasoned and burned correctly, is one of the most environmentally friendly fuels there is. Leaving off the same/less pollution as it would rotting in the woods. So speak up at the polls, write your representative and/or congressman when these proposed bans come up. We all need to speak up.

This is what I don't understand about all the eco-groups that HATE woodburning. Newslfash: It doesn't get any more environmentally friendly or low impact than timber-resources. Trees truly are the ultimate renewable resource. Trees always have, and always will be an important natural resource. Timber products as a heating source have show to have a much higher NET energy than other forms of fuel. That is, it requires less effort to extract and process them into a usable commodity, meaning that less energy is used as a whole (and wasted) getting that resource from a raw material to the market so consumers can utilize it. As other sources of heat and energy are exhausted and become harder to get, their net energy goes down. Eventually it will be incredibly difficult to use them at all. And then what? While the tree hugging types are trying to run the world on wind, some of us have already recognized the incredible resource we have in our forests, and the potential they hold for a near endless supply of easily accessible energy

I sent the governer's office some information, but since I'm not from Utah, I don't know if it'll even be read. We must have a voice and never remain silent. But, I agree with keeping it clean :)

And... running the world on wind has extra benefits too. Wind turbines not only make electricity sometimes, when the wind blows... they now have some that make perty good heat too...

Seems like an over reaction since wood burning is such a minor contributor to the smog.

I hope this person doesn't use electricity. Since, you know, it comes from coal which is a bigger contributor to pollution, than wood burning (if that is what this person cares about).

Also, I hope this person doesn't drive a car, since that is the largest contributor to the smog "issue."

I emailed the governor's office. This is the response I received back:

    "January 9, 2015
    "Dear Douglas:
"Thank you for your email to the Office of the Governor regarding a potential Wood Burning Ban. I have been asked to respond on behalf of the Governor.
"Our office appreciates hearing from constituents and your comments and opinion regarding this issue have been noted.
"Thank you for taking time to contact us regarding this matter.
    "Sincerely,
    "Tiffany Clason
    "Constituent Services"

At least I know it was received :)

Hard to believe, its easy to assume its because of the brain dead, wet wood, smoldering fools who think they know what they are doing.

f I ever build, I'll push as much passive solar as possible. (Of course I'll want wood heat as a back up.) But passive solar is where it's at!
