The forecast shows some cold and wet weather coming so I loaded the garage up today. After I got that done I took this rare opportunity of having no snow in January to move some wood to my back stacks. I had a stack missing about 2/3 of a cord so I filled it with some soft maple that's been heap up since summer. I was planning to wait until spring to stack the heap since most of my racks were full but with no snow I figured why not! The wife didn't notice a difference in the heap but I did. Left side is white ash, smaller portion on the right is soft maple. I flip flopped with this load, up to this point the left was soft maple the right was white ash. This is about a 1/3 cord or the beloved "face" cord. This rack is mostly white oak with some black locust, hickory and iron wood sprinkled in. Here is the wood I stacked today. The wood between the red lines is what I did today. The stacks in back are 48' long so about 2 cords worth.
Thanks, I've been on the 3 year plus plan for a while now.(figured it out real quick reading posts from people like Dennis) The stuff in the small rack is from 2010, the ash from 2011 and the maple 2012. I don't worry about giving ash and maple extra time they season pretty quick. The soft maple and ash would be fine after a year if I needed to pull some forward for some reason. I find the oak needs at least 3 years in my area.
I like that pic of the stacks going way off into the distance. They look to be high up off the ground with cinderblocks, this must help dry even the bottom courses of splits real nice. Hefty collection of fuel you have there - good job, rdust.
Smart man, because your right, the weather man is calling for some serious cold towards the end of this coming week. I know my location in the northeast is no where near the coldest part of the country but a high of 14 is cold for us, I think that's Thursday coming up.
Those are some nice looking rows, great BTUs in the racks and the rows. Nice work rdust, way to stay after it!
Nice work rdust, beautiful straight stacks The guys at work this morning told me 9 degrees here in my part of Va. mid week, I ain't ready for that after several weeks of 40-50 degree weather.
Good work rdust. Hope you didn't get ice today. We got a ground cover of snow early then it changed to rain/ice and some sleet. But it is not really bad out there although I have no desire to get in the car and take a drive.
