R values on a hearth build?

The stove look great in place but seeing it there brings up a couple of questions...

Does that stove have the rear heat sheild? What is the rear wall under the stone? How is the side clearance towards the radiator?

    From the Woodstock site:

    STOVE CLEARANCES:
Stove Rear Clearance (No Protection): 14"
Stove Rear Clearance (w/ Heat Shield Kit): 6"
Stove Side Clearance: 19" Stove Corner Clearance: 6"

That's something I'm still mulling over. I ordered it with the rear heat shield, so rear and rear corner clearances are 6", and I'm beyond that, with 9 3/4" on the left rear corner, more on the right.

My right hand wall (window frame) towards the radiator is pretty close to bare minimum. The Airstone on the rear wall does have some insulation value ("foam concrete") according to the manufacturer's website, but they do not give any R values.

How can AirStone improve commercial projects?

The recycled content and lighter weight of AirStone can contribute to LEED points. A 50% reduction in shipping weight versus other manufactured stone requires less packaging and significantly reduces the energy requirements necessary to transport it to the job-site. Plus, the recycled materials provide insulation that would not be associated with conventional artificial stone. This reduces a building’s energy demand.

Through its recycled content and lighter weight, Baton stone can contribute to LEED points in the following ways:
    • Energy and Atmosphere
Improved Energy Performance: The recycled materials used in this product provide insulation that would not be associated with conventional artificial stone. This reduces the energy demand of the building.

Its an inch thick and it is applied directly to the painted plaster walls. The side leg covers also serve as a heat shield but I need to watch that far right corner. I might need to slide the whole stove closer to the left rear corner to adjust right side clearances. I can also slide it forward another inch yet.

If I have the room I always like to give a little extra clearance...

Just watch your window treatments, some of them melt very easily.

Thanks! Everyone here is real pleased with how it turned out. The colors we picked for the IS stove work great with the Airstone product we got from Lowes and the slate slabs that were given to us.

I spent (wasted) the day doing year end paperwork at the office so hopefully I can get the DVL stovepipe cut and installed tomorrow.

We went ahead and moved the stove a couple inches to the left and an inch or two forward. It's no longer symmetrical with the cuts in the slate but we definitely have all our clearances covered according to the Woodstock manual.

I got the double wall stove pipe cut down to fit and we cleaned the Class A flue outside this afternoon. I just have to do the final fit on the double wall, screw it all together, drill the hole for the flue probe thermometer and we're in business.

First break in fire later tonight. Heading out to a friend's for an annual Epiphany party right now.

The chimney was really clean. We last cleaned it when we first installed the Beta Ideal Steel in the fall of 2013. About 2 cups of soot from the Class A flue outside, another cup from the double wall stove pipe. Better than what we saw with the Fireview.

Interestingly, I talked to Lorin today at Woodstock. She said in a corner install, as long as the corners are at 6" clearance, the distances from the sides don't matter. Its only with a parallel wall where you need a 19" side clearance. So our first placement was Ok according to her. But we needed to move the stove regardless to get the double wall stove pipe plumb when properly lined up with the thimble.
